Model Kit- Fine Molds 1/72 IJN Midget Sub Target A, Type A Pearl Harbor

The vessel...
The HA-19 is one of five Japanese midget submarines that participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. HA-19, with her four companions, was supposed to penetrate the harbor and attack the U.S. Pacific Fleet. However, none of the vessels managed to damage or sink any U.S. ships.

HA-19 developed problems with its gyro-compass, forcing it to make a visual approach to the harbor entrance. It ran aground on a coral reef. Draining its batteries attempting to back off the reef, the boat was abandoned by it's two-man crew. Scuttling charges failed to work. The boat, with one crew-member, was captured by U.S. forces.

This is Fine Molds 1/72 midget sub, which I have built her as the captured HA-19, Pearl Harbor. I've bent up the net cutter to mimic the Navy's photo shown...the surface of the vessel is covered with salt left after the water evaporated, in which I replicated the effect by dissolving sea salt in warm water (Mrs. Gator's idea) and then brushing it onto the model. After it dried, I added to white pigments to brighten up some of the darker areas. The figures are from Prieser.

Nice build and good presentation. Its a somewhat dull hull as its basically just a cigar with a few attachments, so getting it to look interesting takes something - good work! Cheers/Jan

Nice one Kenny. This is a difficult model to make interesting. The bashed up wire cutter and the salt weathering bring it to life. Have a virual beer and give yourself a pat on the back cheers, Julian

The evaporated salt was a good call on Lady Gator's part--it should work wonders as well for large scale boats and amphib vehicles as well! --Karl

Hi Kenny Congratulations on a good display of a relatively difficult to make interesting subject! The salt weathering came out nice, as did the damage! The other option would be putting it on top of the trailer with lots of civilians around it, for the bond raising tour Good job! Cheers, Rui
