HMS X7 Midget Submarine

The X7 was a fifty-three foot British midget submarine developed to reach those inaccessible locations where conventional submarine could not go. The X7 was armed with two thirty foot charges that could be deployed from below its target. The charges were set with timers allowing the escape of the sub.

The X7 was deployed during the British attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in 1943. Upon trying to escape the sub was damaged resulting in the captain the order to surface. As the captain climbed out under fire, the sub began to sink. Only one out of the three remaining crew members still inside was able to get out alive.

In 1974, divers located the remnants of the X7 and raised the wreckage in 1976 and they were given to the Imperial War Museum.
