I think the wake looks right, but the boat is riding a little too high ...

Here are some photos of 80' ELCOs at various speeds in varying sea conditions. As you can see, they vary considerably, so it all depends on your scenario.

I believe, and I COULD be totally wrong here; those stiffeners were put on the hull after the 557 were returned to the US after service with RON 29 and transferred to RON 4 at Melville.

I've never seen these items on any other ELCO either. As Garth noted, this photo was taken after 557 was transferred to RON 4 (Nov44) and reconfigured. Given the light clothing on the crew, this photo was probably taken late Spring 45 or later, as you don't dress that lightly here in New England until then! A photo of 558 taken at the same time does not show these items.

I don't know why they're there. They are on both sides and are only attached to the hull and sheer guard. The latter is not a structural member and does not bear any load. It's essentially a cover for the open grain of the deck material.

Many thanks again for the Info gents not wanting to start a Big debate but do you think they could have been for a trial to add more torpedos or other types of wepons to the hull sides not that they could have had much more added to the final build type
Just trying to gain as much Info as Possible for a future build project not a what if just to get sertain specifics of the boats outlined, having already read the squadron Torpedo boats in action and Allied torpedo boats and nearly took the print off the pages I just find this type of boat the most interesting

Fingers crossed I've actually got something right for once, click onto the above and it should open up onto youtube PT boat making - it might help.

Keith,

You know what?

What I'm thinking ...

Is that I know that some of the combat veteran boats which were put into the training squadron after their combat tours were sometimes used to train students in how to repair hull or battle damage and those stiffeners might have been put on as an exercise to repair damage like if parts of the decking separated from the hull.

Just my two cents for what it's worth. Like Ross said, photos of the 558 from the same time frame don't show those ... so, ...

Damage repair training could be and appears to be a pausible explaination ...

Garth
