I'm building the Revell 1:150 Scale Fregate U.S.S. United States (practice for a better kit later).
Any suggestions on black hull paint that is dark enough to look correct but still light enough to show weathering effects (washes, dry-brushing)?

I used Citadel "Chaos Black" on my Revell Constitution and Kearsarge. The paint has a nice sheen when dried that looked really nice after weathering. LIfecolour Rail weathered black is another alternative, serie # UA723

I agree with Julian, both paints are excellent. The Chaos Black is very useful for many modeling projects and I always keep some on hand.

995 which is german grey

Vallejo German Grey will need a lot of shading to reach a black effect, see my Zvezda Borodino build. The grey is very, well, grey.....................

I was thinking a black ink wash over the german grey, I was going for a weathered look. If it does not work out it always washes off with soapy water.

If you are going in that direction try "Sepia" colour oil paint,thinned down to a wash consistency, works better than ink IMHO,

Many thanks for all the replies and help. I'm normally on the other site that begins with A (land), won't say name here lol and just thought I would try this model for a change,
have built some wooden kit ships in the past so should be ok with the rigging (legs crossed, need hands for model)

You could always try Gunze Tire Black if you want to use acrylics.
