HMS Ascot was a mine hunter from the British Navy during World War I. The paddle steamer was built on 26th of January 1916 at Ailsa Shipbuilding Company. Powered by 32 paddles on both sides. She was one of 32 ships of the Racecourse-Class (also known as Ascot-Class).
Die HMS Ascot was the last ship which sank at World War I. On November 10, 1918 the HMS Ascot was torpedoed by U-Boat UB-67 and sank in the North Sea. Today, the wreck is in a depth of 60m between Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tine.

The kit
The kit by Polish manufacturer AJM Models in scale 1/350 is a “all-round carefree package". The hull is casted in a two-piece massive resin part (upper- and lower part separately). Most of the kits part are high quality and very clean casted resin parts. Additionally you find a bigger plate of etched parts, some turned brass parts for the masts, a lasered wooden deck, decals and wire. Perfectly packed, very high quality. A lovely kit which promises lot of fun!

Let's go ...
At the beginning I have cleaned the two parts of the hull. I drilled two holes in the lower part and also in the wooden base of the display for adding the brass rod which will hold the ship later. A small gap between the two hull-parts needs some filler and sanding, then the two add-on parts on both sides, which will include the paddle wheels later, where glued to the hull …

So far for the moment…. Next step, sanding…. Then adding first etched parts to the hull..

Cheers
Micha

It's amazing how much detail will come about on this one! I just stopped by the AJM Models site and checked out the box cover...awesome! Bring on the photo etch!

*** UPDATE ***

First the grey color (Lifecolor) is painted with the airbrush, followed by some masking and the green painting. Both colors painted not fully covering the black primer so that the black remains visible as shadow...

Next steps - Details on the deck, superstructure....

But for now.... now I want to wish you and your familiys a MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS. Enjoy the holiday season with your loved family! Also thank you very much for your interest in watching this project!

Cheers

*** UPDATE ***

The kit of the HMS Ascot provides lot of high quality Resin-parts and photo-etched parts for the superstructures and the details of the maindecks. The commando's bridge is a one piece resin part, which is empty inside, having lot of details also on the inside, incl. a detailed floor!
All parts were painted before, added on the maindeck floor after floor... fan after fan, funnel after funnel.... and so on.
The masts werde turned brass parts, the yards and crane booms made of brass wire.

Next steps... washing with oil colors, clear coat, then the big paddle wheels and the rigging ...

*** FINISHED ***

British armed paddle steamer of World War I - the "HMS ASCOT". A multimedia-kit by Polish manufacturer AJM Models.

The kit is consisting of:

- 2-piece hull (possibility to show it as "waterline").
- Several resin parts for all the super structure and further details of the ship.
- Photo etched parts for all the small details, for the railings, for the paddle wheel
- turned brass parts for the two masts
- brass wire in several sizes
- decal sheet for the markings and flags
- plastic sheet
- a fantastic mounting instruction

I have painted the kit with colors by Lifecolor and weahered it with some oil-color washings. The rigging is made with EZ-Line.

I hope you like the little ship (it is about 20cm long) ...

Cheers

Michael
