Hi, got a Merit G-5 Torpedo Boat and OSA-II in the mail, but cannot find much at all other than what is on Wikipedia for the G-5. Dose any one have any useful details/history's or URL's or tips regards these kits?

Great News Chris! Looking forward to following along once you dig your heels in!
I don't have and working knowledge of the G-5, but with a simple tweaking of a google search can open more doors to look through. Translating "Tupolev G-5 torpedo boat" to Russian... "Туполев G-5 торпедный катер" opens the Russian Google...

Usually if the site is in another language I paste the url into the search bar of the browser which will open a google page and the link to translate the page is right next too or under the link.
If you find words pertaining to something specific you want to search, you can use something like google translate to past in one language, translate to another and reenter it into google...this will give you more site to find information. try other languages like German and Chinese and more will pop up!
Bring on the building!

Thanks, I'm on an iPad so some times dose not like google translated URLs as masked the page to large to navigate ~80 point text.
The should both arrive today or tomorrow as orders are with Hannants. I'll try to get some box/Sprue detail shots uploaded.

Ok so the G-5 Soviet TB and the OSA-2 from Merit arrived and WOW the amount of detail is on par with the ZH Horton wing.
There are small clear parts for the Windows on the deck house on both kits. Though there too small to see through so there's no internal betails other than the OSA's missle tubes.
Also there are multiple 3D slide moldings on each, of exerlent quality ( DShK I'm looking at you - slide molded flash vents on the mussel brake).Though there is some light flash, but not on any where that would show and is only on 2-3 small parts that are easy to clean up.
Speaking of small parts. NOTHING is simplified like Tamyia would do with say a tab, for a hatch dog. No, full 3D molded seperate part for each hatch dog but the all appeare to have locating slots or. Very nicely molded on ones for the smaller hatches. And masses of rivets on the G-5.
Sorry for lack ok pic's I'll try to get some later.

HI,
I also have this kit, the box art does differ slightly from what is inside, the colour scheme is different,a LARGE 12-piece exhaust is provided which takes up almost 3/4 of the hull length, a windscreen for the commander is also supplied, and a mounting for a small MG to go in front,
(but strangely no gun!?),IT is a BIG kit but NICE!, it would seem that the version depicted on the box and what is actually supplied are early OR later versions!.
lets hope we can locate more info soon.

You should have a spruce with 2 DSHK style heavy mg's on.
Cannot get to mine at the moment. There's now shots on 1999.co.jp
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10347147
Looks the same to me.
Edit: think I see what you mean, parts C24/37-38 on page 15 (bellow link)

In front on the wind screen?
That's the torpedo drift sight.

Merit gave me one as a Christmas gift. I'm impressed with it. Although, the torpedoes just don't look "right" for some reason that I can't put my finger on. Other than for that, it looks like a good kit. I'm going to have Stan build it OOB for me - owing to the fact that I know next to nothing about the G-5s and any Soviet MTBs (other than the Elcos, Higgins and license-built Vospers we lend-leased to them). I will say this; they were funky looking little boats.
To me, they looked like a cross between an English CMB and a T-34 tank.

Haven't looked at thr Torpedos that closely but they should be 533mm 53-38 or 39's per http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTRussian_WWII.htm from memory the 53-39 looks right.
EDIT: just looked at the 1999.co.jp link I posted and I think your right there are no assembly screw holes and the warheads are to pointed. Thogh they would not be visible once fitted.
And needs a figure set. - looking to build mine as one of the Spanish civil war (republican) or captured Finnish ones, but no photos that I can find exist for these so now idea of paint or markings.

The width looks ok, the fins are usually not that wider than the body I believe..
Though may be to short on the back.end on the control vains ( though w still do not know which type the torpedos are meant to be. What a said above was just a ruff guess as there is nearly no info on these boats in English other than what's on wiki.

Chris,
I don't know anything about this boat but I am looking forward to seeing you build her.

Here is a link to a better photo of a torpedo getting loaded aboard a G-5 https://www.coh2.org/topic/14559/ww2-daily-pic/relicentertainment//page/81
The other than the warheads that could be the incorrect shap ( though this dental would be hidden when there fitted) the back end looks about the same - one the slots have been added.
