Hi Si,
that's a very nice touch to your build log, that you're doing the other one for comparison!! Quite some changes there on the after structure! -I had some sources showing the changes, but somehow I decided to ignore them (I didn't know about the Admiralty kit then); now I remember: at the time I decided it was too complex to scratch with just a few pictures... That's really an improvement!!
Very nice process on the hull and the deck/vents!!
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
Thank you, The after superstructures are so different I thought it was worth it. The Admiralty upgrade is a very good , the changes to the after superstructure certainly match the limited drawings I have, and like you I would not have liked to have tried a scratchbuild from those.
The vents re fun, there rather a lot of them too, but from a painting and accuracy point of view, much better than moulded in with the deck.
Cheers

Thanks Russ,
Wait till I get onto the detail stuff, including more more etch, that will slow me down a bit.
Sundays update still to post, will try to get that done tonight.

Sunday's progress.
The first two life rafts are required, the GMM set provided etch for the bottoms.
Funnels, and some superstructure units assembled. This ship has quite a complex superstructure, this isn't the half of it.
First ladder folded and test fitted.
Details going on the lower main superstructure deck, location for tha after funnel has been painted black as the after funnel is see through.
New sections sprayed, funnel cap painted and test fitted.
A quick overview of the whole project so far. Looks a lot further on than it really is. lots of detail work on these bits to do yet.
One thing I did notice looking at this picture, the 20mm tubs on either side of where the conning tower will go need removing before any more progress on that.
Cheers

Wow Si, rapid perfection as always mate.

Well - what Russ said!! Rapid perfection - good way to put it
Very nice progress there, superstructure is coming along very nicely!!
You are right about the 20mm tubs forward, they need to go, the guns don't fit. To my knowledge, there actually were guns, but the tubs are wrong shaped.
The four holes, two either side, on the same level, need to be closed I think - they were intended for saluting guns, that weren't carried in late '41. I am not sure about early '41 I have to admit. Apparently there were a couple wooden benches installed in '36 for the dignitaries to hang out. No idea about '41 though, I omitted them...
Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan,
May well have missed the removal of the saluting guns.
Some of the drawings I have seem to suffer from a little uncertainty on exactly what date they represent the ship.
I am not exactly sure if she had any 20mm at that time, R&R show refers to eight singles being added "mid 1941" I am presuming that was after the Bismarck chase, the Kit shows her with about a dozen, so either four were fitted prior the Bismarck chase or one of the two are wrong?
More research needed.
Cheers

Proper update today.
The first two liferafts with paddles and lashings fitted.
structure fitted under the after section of the upper main superstructure deck.
Moulded on boat chocks removed.
Underdeck supports fitted to the upper level of the after superstructure, and sprayed.
Upper deck sections fitted, still need a coat of dark grey, all the gun supports also in place.
Liferafts also fitted.
Basic assembly on the four boats that alongside the hangers. These come from the Admiralty upgrade set, they still need rudders and oars etc. adding. The boat craddles will come from the WEM set.
Overview of the ship as she stands.
More soon,
Si

Very nice update, Si!
Quite some progress on all the various parts of the superstructure - that's quite a complex on on good Repulse, but it gives the ship it's distinctive look! Nice work!
- and a great job on the life rafts/floats! They'll stand out!! Not to forget, the Admiralty kit's parts - the boats look like e real improvement over the kit's part!!
Looking forward to see her grow!!
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
I think it must rate as the most complex superstructure I have come across.
Very interesting to build.
Bit od touching up to do around the front gun support before a few sections of railing do on.
Cheers

Thanks Jan,
It is getting there, still lots to do though.
Intend to try and tuck a Walrus on one Hanger, since WEM give nice etched hanger doors.

I did like the WEM hangar doors very much for my build, they add depth to that area.
I don't know what I did wrong - or if anything - however, the Walrus would not fit through the hangar door (see my Belfast - same thing). The dimensions of the Walrus seem to be spot on though... Would be interesting to see if you find out what's wrong there...
Cheers,
Jan

Interesting, I will have a try, need to have a look at what I have got on Walrus wing folds.
Could be the external dimensions of the hanger are correct, but that would make the internal dimensions a little narrow.
Hope to get some time in the workshop over the long weekend net weekend.

A bit more progress,
Quarterdeck details on.
Slight fit problem caused by accommodation ladder davits.
Just turned it through 180 degrees, job done.
Parts for the two Walrus's.
Not a fan of clear aircraft, so misted some dark grey on, and nasty moulded on struts removed.
Etch going on No.1 Walrus. Neither WEM or GMM provided engine mounts, so making those up as I go along.
Superstructure glued down and details added.
More soon
