I said the next one would the last pre-dreadnought in a major navy, and here she is HMS Agamemnon, the Royal Navy's last one, decommissioned in 1926, after spending four years as a target ship.
The kit.
The Hull mouldings.
The etch.
Pretty complete.
I have aquired a cheap but intact Ponots dreadnought set, My intention is to use some of the parts for the aerial spreaders, and the net booms. the nets will be shown deployed, they will have to be scratchbuilt, as the dreadnought had 13 booms each side compared to Agamemnon's 11 and the spacing is different.
Comparison of the kit booms vs pontos.
Assembly started.
The Hull structure test fitted.
Hull halves assembled.
and the deck fitted.
More soon.
Cheers
Si

I agree with Thomas, your Agamemnon will no doubt be up to your usual standard of modelling excellence...but to call that homely ship a beauty, well, that might be a stretch!

I will following this one. Always like this early battleships and you have built an interesting array of them recently. Should be a good one as Hobby Boss ships seem to be pretty good kits.

Thanks Tim,
This is going to be quite a job, a good few changes between the kit and the ship in 1915, and the camouflage she wore during the Dardenelles too.
Cheers

Hi Michael,
Good to have you along for the ride. The Hobby boss / Trumpeter pre-dreads are really nice kits, with very acceptable etch. I think it is excellent that at least one major manufacturer is taking an interest in this eclectic period of naval development.
Cheers

Hi Si,
just in time to watch you starting your next project! And another nice one, nice start!
I'm in for the ride, of course, even if possibly rather silent, I already apologize for that.
I'm looking forward to another fine Heathwood Shipyard build!!
Cheers,
Jan

Always glad to have you along Jan,
This one is going be interesting, quite a few changes from the kit to bring her up to her appearance in 1915.
Hope you enjoy the ride.
Cheers

Si,
Nice start.
How does a target ship last 4 years? I know the British navy gunners weren't the best shots but the odds would have caught up with her.

Thanks Mark,
According to Burt, her time as a target was used for testing light & medium calibre shells 4" - 6" and the effectiveness of protection, including crew stations on the upper deck against straffing from aircraft.
I have to agree with your comment re the RN's gunnery in the first World war era. The gunnery statistics were not impressive, example from Agamemnon's trails, 22 hits out of 400 6" fired from 14,000yds.

Hi Russ,
I new I couldn't fool everybody.
The hacking about to bring her forward in time isn't, except for loosing the main topmast, structural so won't be that different.
Glad to have you along.

Si,
Did admirals really use those walks? I thought those guys never left the bridge.
Nice installation, the door really looks sweet.

Hi Mark,
Admirals did use the walks, more likely in port, as their day cabin was right aft. At sea, they tended to live in their sea cabin, when not on the Flag bridge, which was close by it. Off the top of my head, the last British Battleships fitted with such a luxury were the Queen Elizabeth class.
The door came from a spare on the WEM Warspite set, I does fit in quite nicely.
Cheers
Si.

Like greyhound at the races Si you're off to a blistering start!
Now, as I'm taking notes for her sister ship that I've got in the stash (Lord Nelson), what colour grey would be appropriate on her?
Also, are you sure they wore boot topping during the great war?

Hi Russ,
Don't like to hang about mate
For the Lord Nelson in an as built scheme, looking at the photographs in Burt, I would think the colour approximates somewhere close to B6/B30 mid grey, maybe a bit lighter.
Oddly it looks like both ships had a boot topping, a couple of pics from R.A. Burt's British Battleships 1889-1904, show a boot topping on the Lord Nelson, and these date from December 1908.
Hope that helps you out.
Agamemnon appears to be in a much darker grey, with lighter grey camo in 1915. I am guessing on the exact colours, just using what I have got.
Doing a bit of digging, it would appear Boot topping came in when the RN switched from Black white & buff to grey, or shortly after, likely it varies from ship to ship depending on where and when they were repainted.
Cheers

Thanks for the info Si
probably gonna ask a few more questions along the way if that's ok?
Looking at my own copy of RA Burts Battleships, the line drawings clearly show the boot topping. They don't seem as wide as on later ships though?
For the colour I'm not sure which one to chose out the colourcoats range here?

Si, following along as I have Aggy in my stash.
I've had a break from ship modelling for over a year now but picked up a nice 1/350 T-class sub at Telford to be built as HMS Terrapin so that has hit the bench running. Just ordering a RM Tazzoli Italian sub so at least the subs are back.

It is a nice kit, and goes together well. Already built the Lord Nelson, hence converting this one to 1915 fit.
