This letter was seen sitting alongside Dave Coventry's scratch built HMS Prince of Wales R09 at the Telford model show.

Apparently it is legit and Airfix really are looking to see if there is interest.

So, if you are interested, maybe drop them a line and let them know

One one hand I want to say YES! Produce the kit because more options and kits are always welcome and great.

On the other hand, I will likely never pick one up. I typically buy kits that have either Historical Significance or are aesthetically pleasing to me. Sadly, the QE's are neither. They are untried platforms and to my eye are not very attractive.

But that's just me and my opinion. I know there are many who are itching to get their grubby little paws on one of these kits.

I second Rory's thoughts. I know a lot of folks want the QE and PoW though and I would support production of these kits.

Personally I wish Airfix or someone would produce RN, and Commonwealth destroyers and frigates in 1/350. I think there would be a better market for them as long as they were of high quality.

Indeed. Should Airfix produce the QE class in 1/350 it could be a spring board to re-introduction of their Type 45, and future releases of the Type 26 and 31 Frigates. The Type 26's have potential market in Australia and Canada as well!

I think Airfix should do themselves a favour and also release them in 1/700 as volume sales would be much higher!

Would not turn any you mentioned down Russell, but I was thinking more along the lines of the war produced RN DD's and of course the Battle, 1950's Daring, and some of the frigates converted from WWII destroyers.

It sort of irritates me that few cold war destroyers are available in plastic, when you would think they would be. Thank goodness we have ISW.

Saw this up at Telford, at the time I will admit I was not sure if it was a hoax or not.

From a personal point of view a QE is not something I would have an interest in.

I am with Chuck on this one, The Only British / Commonwealth destroyer or escort in 1/350 in plastic is the Trumpy Tribal, which does have the odd issue or two, that and the Mirage Flower, the only other options are Resin.

Cheers

Chuck, Si, I agree, there are so many RN ships that have been overlooked by the kit manufacturers, whilst other ships from other navies, with less illustrious careers, and even what-ifs and ships that were never completed have been kitted.
But, I can understand now why this is, given the financial requirements of the NMM to release, what amount to be only outline drawings. Given the narrow profit margins of the kit manufacturers, this is another cost they just don't need.
On top of that, the actual ship builder's plans (IE detailed blue prints which allow proper detailing of the kits) just isn't available to the public.
As most, if not all of the UK's ship builders are now owned by BAE, it is them who hold the legacy blue prints. And, BAE don't like to share their toys, as they worry that they will be legally liable if some numpty decides to injure themselves on designs conceived nearly 100 years ago.
So, yes, I understand why so many RN ships aren't available in styrene.

Chuck, for a good range of cold war ships, you could try Atlantic models, run by Pete Hall of White Ensign models fame!

Russell: Flyhawk and IBG don't seem to have any trouble finding research material, although so far they have confined themselves to WWII RN DD's

I suppose my affinity for Cold War types stems from the fact that these were the top of the line ships I remember from when I was young. Most were wartime built or at least immediate post war. They were the ones I would visit on about a once a month basis, as they made port calls in my home town. Geaings, Sumners and the occasional Forrest Sherman and four gun Fletcher, and quite a few RN DD's and frigates as well. The Baltimore/DC Naval Reserve destroyer escort was one of only six 5" gun Buckley's (six that were not DER's or APD's anyway).

I just like them, and could spend the rest of my days happily building them.

Sure would like to do Lively and Kelly in 1/350.

I believe Flyhawk offers the full hull/waterline option in 1/700. Would love it if they continue this practice in 1/350

I have to agree with all the comments so far. There would be a Market for the QE but not in my stash. I would much rather prefer some of the classes you mentioned along with maybe in 1-350 HMS Ajax/Achilles and HMS Tiger/Blake. They would get my attention.

This is true but the kits are still out there and seem to be reasonably available and priced.

Latest edition of the Airfix work bench is looking for expressions of interest for a possible 1/350 kit of the QE/POW, so if you're interested, be sure to let them know at [email protected]

PS, you need to scroll nearly all the way to the bottom

I tell you what, if they do a set of decent plastic F-35's then they can have all my money. I have only seen resin or 3D printed versions out there and they are silly expensive.

Hi Russ,

My eyes cannot cope with 1/700th any more.

Now, if they scaled those, and some of the other kits up to 1/350th,

Yes Please!!!!

Cheers

Rory, I suspect at some point decent F-35's in 1/350 are a certainty, either via AM producers or the kit manufacturer's themselves, given that there are a number of USN vessels also using the F-35B that are already kitted up. Whether Airfix do a good job of them or not is another thing

You're not alone there Si! 1/700 isn't for me either, but if the Lusty class are to be released in 1/700 then their 1/350 big brothers can't be that far off either now!

I have got everything crossed (which is mildly uncomfortable)

Let's hope so, I will be give their POW in 1/350 a try.

As for the Flyhawk 1/350 POW, I'll be watching your build closely.
