As previously discussed in the Campaign Idea's thread I would like to propose a new campaign to start after the "Below 1000 tons" Campaign comes to an end.

This will be the Tin Can Sailors campaign aimed at all vessels which are defined as a Destroyer.

This definition is: A destroyer is a fast, maneuverable, long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against powerful short range attackers.

Restrictions would be as follows:

- Any ship which fulfills the above criteria. To help open it up this can include any ship be it wet or space i.e A Klingon D2

- Start date of 1 October 2020 and have it run for 1 year since us ship builders are a slow lot. This can be pushed back depending on how long it takes to get the initial 10 participants.

- No limits on scale or vessel tonnage.

- I have no issues with started kits but no more than 25% completed.

- All aftermarket parts/PE welcome.

Count me in.
Got plenty of 1/700 destroyers in the stash. Mostly Royal Navy, Japanese and US. Trickiest job will be choosing one!

I will start working on a possible campaign ribbon. If any one has any design ideas let me know

How about a shot of a destroyer bow charging towards you with large bow waves to indicate high speed. With a bow shot the ship could be from any navy.

Does an admin need to create the Official Thread or is it something I need to do?

I think that you can start a "Now Enlisting" thread today, but I think an Admin has to open an "Official" thread on the start day.

We can use this as the enlisting and discussion thread until the Official One gets started.

I am excited to start this one. I have 7 contenders, all in 1/350. The hard part will be choosing which one I will do. I have:

Trumpeter JMSDF Atago DDG-177
Trumpeter JMSDF Myoko DDG-175
Trumpeter USS Momsen DDG-92
Trumpeter USS Hopper DDG-70

Dragon KM Z-26
Trumpeter HMS Zulu

Showcase Models HMAS Vendetta. Can be done as WW1 HMS Vendetta.

So 4 modern, 2 WW2 and 1 WW1 to choose from. Decisions, decisions...

I was going for something a bit more playful. Something like:

I have the WEM HMS Glowworm, and a couple of Tribals in the stash. Might be one or two things I have forgotten about

Cheers

LOL, Way Cool, the old Lindberg Blue Devil carton? Might be a bit of a pain to fit it into 200 x 50.

I think the only campaign if done over here on Model Shipwrights was the Cold War Tin Cans Around the World Campaign back in 2009. I have a couple of 1/700 destroyers that I could do for this one, so what the heck! Do destroyer escorts count?

Welcome Jim!

My inclination is to say no to Destroyer Escorts. They don't really fit the role of destroyers in that they were primarily designed as convoy escorts and ASW work while Destroyers were primarily supposed to fleet escorts. USS England had a top speed of only 23 knots for instance.

Most other navy's of the time classified them as Frigates and in the 1970's the USN designated them as such too. A prime example of that is the Buckley Class which the Royal Navy designated as the Captain Class Frigates.

Hey Rory,

Just fyi, I changed the campaign end date from 9-30-2020 to 9-30-2021. I figured you wanted us to have just a bit more time...!
