Hi guys.
I bought this kit yesterday. And one of the decal options in the kit is for a boat based in Boulogne in 1944. Now would it be possible to use this option for a D-Day diorama? Or is it not compatible for D-Day?

I don't recall any S boats seen during D-day iteself. Not sure where Boulonge is located. My first thought was in northern Italy, but I beliece that city is Bologna and it doesn't have sea access. Don't know what you are really looking for here.

Hey Darren

to my information, no S-boats interfered with the landing operations, or atleast not directly against any lct or lcm boats.
Boulogne is situated at quite a distance from the shores of Normandy, so In my opinion it would take atleast 5 hrs to reach the shores, at which point the defence from cruisers and escorts, and not to forget the overall supremacy of the allied fighterplanes would already be too dense for a Schnellboat to survive long time.

Which boat are you talking about (I got the same kit lying around, and a book about SChnellboots as a guide)

Hey Bjorn
The option from Boulogne is the boat commanded by Kapitanleutnant Karl-Erhard Karcher 8th Flotilla.
Hope this helps.

Darren,

I'll check the book for pics or info, I'll let you know something this evening when I come home.

Are you planning to make a dio with a landing craft?

But now I think of it, I thought I read something about a landing operation prior the invasion at D-day, a training-landing on a remote shore of the UK, during which some landing craft were attacked by one or two S-boats, and they caused quite a havoc (also the heavy sea and stormy wind took her toll).

I'll look into it.

hey Drader

thanks for the link, interesting site on a very unknown
Now if we could only find out who were the 9 schnellboots who attacked...!!!

I found following info on another page:
quote
"Times given for the attack vary between 0130 hours and 0204 hours 28 April. The attackers, believed to have been E-boats, were never positively identified, and it is not known whether the two picked up by the radar constituted the whole enemy force. LST 507, the first attacked, was hit by several torpedoes which failed to explode, then was set afire by a direct torpedo hit. Another struck five minutes later. The enemy craft straffed [sic] the decks with machine guns, and fired on men who had jumped into the water. LST 507 began to settle.

I'll keep searching.. somebody should be able to identify the S-boats;

Thank god for the internet!!!

following S-boats engaged the landing force:

from the 5th flotilla

(rotte: formation)
rotte 3 : S-136 + S-138
rotte 2 : S-140 + S-142
rotte1 : S-100 + S-143

following ships from the 9th flotilla joined in to assist their comrades after seeing red flares being fired (actually they thought that red flares were from allied ships in distress)
S-130 + S-145 + S150
It is known that S-145 turned away from the attack to start attacking lowered LCT and LCM's..
