This kit represents one of the SC-497 series ship, of which 438 units were built during WWII. Seventy of the SC-497s were converted into patrol control crafts (SCC), 18 were converted into coastal mine sweepers (AMC), and 8 were converted into patrol gunboats, motor (PGM).

Commissioned on August 25th, 1937, HMS Sheffield was the third light cruiser of the Town-class (Southampton -first group- sub class). The kit depicts HMS Sheffield as during the Battle of the Barents Sea which took place on December 31st, 1942.
