Hello all,

Please find few pics of my first ever complete sculpting (except head, hands and shoes) of figures in 1/35.
The three guys will represent french troops during the taking of Sfax in Tunisia in 1881, which lead to Tunisia becoming a french department. This battle ahs been really fierced. First, french fusiliers marins had to land and the beach and fight in the muslims trenches, and then had to take the towjn houses by houses. I want to depict a small squad enterring the Medina. I took the inspiration from a Detaille painting.
comments, tips and help are more than welcomed

looking ok so far julien, just make sure you dont go oversize with the manaquins as they will grow too large once you start to add the cloathing, the second figure looks most at risk in his torso, always best to keep them on the slim side to allow for bulk of the cloathing.

Nice work mate and i look forward to watching this one develope.

Thanks Steve.
In fact I've decided to represent three kind of morphologies, a tall guy, a big guy and a normal one. I agree I have too be careful that the second one doen't look too fat.
This is really exciting to sculpt its own figures.
I was afraid also with the proportions between legs and torso, but apparently it's fine

Good luck with this Julien and if you need any help just ask.
Now you mention proportions regarding torso and legs i assume the last figure is the tall guy, he has a danggly appearance to his stance.

Hey, Thanks Steve for your remark.
What do you mean exactely by dangling stance. He is a bit lower on the left because is searching is right side cartouchière. Is that you refer to ?

here is left leg. It's larger than the first one, but more realistic for me. I will have to redo the right one to add some volume.
Best,

hi Julien i was meaning that he looks tall .

I like the improvements you have done on the legs and i agree that the right leg needs more volume on the thigh, maybe just needs bulking out at the front.
The drapery is looking nice.

thanks JB and Steve.
yes, I will do it this way.
I have to be carefull with the tall guy regarding the postioning of his head. He must look within his cartouchière, so the head must be looking down.

Good to see you still at this one Julien and progressing well.
I think the first figures right upper leg needs more volume as it looks too skinny, add some volume to the back of it and it should be ok.

Good work mate,

Steve

Hello gents,
Thanks beachbum. The saynette is inspired from the following pictures from Edouard Detaille (I love this painter)
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh16/eissteban/DOCS/sfax.jpg
Steve, nice to see that you are following this one too. You perfectly right, I need to add more volume on the right tigh and to simplify the curves on the above part. There is a difference in volume between right and left legs.
Some more progress :
Julien

Julien, your topic tells me what I've been missing the last months ! This topic made me decide to start sculpting a 1/35 German soldier for my diorama ! Thank you for this inspiring thread man !

You figure looks good, but I'm not an experienced sculptor so don't mind my opinion too much. I remember the fun it is to start sculpting the clothes, belt, gear of a figure, the stage you're at now.

I follow this !

Hello Guy !
Thanks, it's a pleasure to be a muse
I muust say that your thread on the old city building was qyuite inspiring but in the same time was quite frustrating because I know I will never be able to do the same.
Sculpting is very exciting. It gives you the impression to be the doctor in Frankenstein
Some progress pics. I thought I could give him a Nike bandage

Ok here are the week end progress.
I reworked on the officer to make it a bit larger.$
Sculpting the lapels of the tall guy was a pain in the ass (three steps sculpt). I will try onather technique for the shooting guy.
Comment and tips welcomed as usual
Best,

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment.
No the rifle comes from the ICM box on 1870 franco prussian war.
I was scared few weeks ago to full scratch, now it''s ok, but I'm still scared by plastic cards !

Stunning progress, man this is exciting stuff. The third figure is absolutely my favourite one.

I particularly like the gear he's wearing.

His pose is accurate, the rifle must have been quite an operation to make it all match the way it is now ?

Good work so far Julien, I can learn a lot here !

Thanks also Engin !
Guy, I really appreciate your word, this one is also my favorite. For the position of the rifle, I made it step by step, testting the fitting of the rifle with the arms in the fresh paste..
Some more progress over the week end :

Best,

Julien
