I try to keep my stash at around 100 unbuilt kits at any given time, and this includes all types (armor, auto, air, figures, ships, etc.).

Notice that I said "try".

So that means I have 4 kits on the shelf.

By "on the shelf" I presume you mean in the stash rather than activly underway. In which case: don't worry, you are not alone! My stash usually consist of 1 underway (Hard-top Humvee), 2 or 3 on the wardrobe (M1134, F-117 & Ent NX-01) and 1 in the post (M1117)....

and a IDF TOW Humvee conversion set, but no base, kit also in stock.

Only 4!?........ you noob. Last time I count my stash, it was 55 unbuild kits. I made a promise not to buy any kits this year and what you know, already bought one from sale on LHS and another is coming from Sprue Brothers. Plus there´s 3 - 4 interesting kits coming up this year, so my stash will be roughly 60 - 65 after this year. So I strongly agree with Dave and Arnold what comes to discribe this hobby.
But we all are far, far away what a friend of mine has in his "scalemodelworld", as he discribes his hobby room. He has over 250 finished kits, all types, plus over 900 unbuild!! When you enter that room, it´s unreal experience.

how can you NOT buy one when you see a good price?
I've only been back into it since the early spring and I've got on in the works, one about to get started, three in the queue, about 8 that I don't konw if I'll build or give to my son in a couple years, and two on the way from Sprue Brothers.

I recon I have around 12 un built kits, mainly figures and armour. I have been trying to catch the bug but the lack of money sometimes does not help.

Dave, judging by your comment all your patients at your work are recovering model makers?

Well, let me re-phrase that. These 4 kits are the ones that I am actively building. I have a few kits on the shelf, for future use, Yeah right. Someday I hope to tear into them but the manfacturers keep coming up with something that you see and then you are like "gotta have that"!! Oh what a deadly addiction it is.

Ha-Ha! Buy my kits when I get out! No way! This stuff is therapy for me during the winter months. I will keep that in mind though when I become old and cranky I will keep that in mind. I have the cranky part downpat right now, just ask my wife.

The two most common threads that run here these days .

1) how many kit we all have in the stash
2) the price of new kits.

Do we complain, because we cannot afford to buy kits that may never be built?

I think "sickness" sums it up perfectly

So has anybody ever asked why?? Is it the fear of missing a kit if you don't get it right away? Is it a natural hobit of men to collect things (although I thought men wee the hunters...)? Is it too much money on your hands? Is it to keep you from buying drugs?

For me it's probably the first, but I seem to have (temporarily) conquered it for the moment (well, if you don't count figures, updates and accessories... )

Cheerio!

PS: I'd guess about 60 kits plus a whole load of figures in my stash...

For myself, it's because I'm financially secure and can afford to buy the models. Of course, as of lately, I've been pickier in my selections.

Stash's come, stash's go; no, not that stash. I give up on the count, it takes up the whole closet. For on hold builds, about 8, currently building 2 plus one large dio that's been being created for 13 years now. Sickness, therapy? I'll let you know when the doctors report is in via the Mrs.

Compare the number of unbuilt kits in your stash to the number of unworn shoes in your wife's closet and your collection becomes justified. Your unbuilt kits will remain in style much longer than any pair of her shoes and may even increase in value. I haven't looked, but I doubt very many women are selling or buying their shoes on Ebay, either.
Every purchase is an investment in the hobby as well.
Don't worry, be happy!

Dude! Only 4?! I have about 50 unbuilt and about 25 half built kits going right now. Plus a trade in the works. That doesn't include all the countless update, figure, PE, track and tire sets I got laying around, some for kits I don't even own yet. It's a sickness.....

And, I mailed about 40 or so kits to Iraq last year for the troops.

I think the tendancy to buy a kit is just natural. Who knows when it will become discontinued. You might read a book like I did and get inspired to try and set the scene and BOOM! They don't have the kit anymore. That just happened to me when I read about the LRDG in Africa. I went looking for the Chevy knowing it is discontinued. (Never know though). I do know that Tamiya is coming out with a new version. Hopefully with more up to date tooling. So, it is better to have on hand then to miss out.
