The Interstate RR tested the Alco RS3, a C&O RSD5 and EMD SD7 leading up to their 1953 purchase. EMD used the SD7 demonstrator in trials on the Interstate RR but in their final bid tried to low ball the railroad offering a ballasted 1000 hp BB switcher instead of the 1500 hp CC SD7.

Perhaps, the management at EMD considered the Virginia based Interstate RR a backward hillbilly short line that would buy what ever was offered.

It's now part of the mighty Norfolk Southern Corporation and hosts the latest in today's locomotives.

A wonderful resource to obtain is the book, Appalachian Coal Hauler Interstate Railroad's Mine Runs and Coal Trains by Hugh Wolfe and Ed Wolfe,TLC Publishing Inc. .
