Mike,

Your Zero "office" is looking awesome! The cockpit is the one area where Airfix's A6M2 is better than the Hasegawa kit - and I see that you have completely remedied that shortcoming! Be sure to post more pics as you go along, as I'd love to watch your build as it develops.

Nice work on your Zero Tim! The Airfix kit is pretty nice looking especially in the cockpit. My hasegawa Zero on the other hand had no such detail so I felt compelled to detail it. It got a bit out of hand I had to put a stop to the madness and just took this pic before it gets Some paint.

The basic airframe is completed.

As a kid I very much enjoyed the older generation Airfix airplane kits, but these newer kits are sooooo much better!

Crisply molded with good fit and sharp panel lines, they even have some fun features like (with this kit) optional folding wingtips and a separate rudder.

The Airfix A6M2 cockpit is finished.
The stock kit parts were painted Tamiya acrylic XF-71 IJN Cockpit Green, some Tamiya flat black, and a wash of Grumbacher Raw Umber artist’s oil. The instruments are the Airfix-supplied decal – very nice.

Here is the Airfix Zero cockpit test-fitted.
The only change I made was to drill out holes in the seat, which were depicted as deep depressions. Otherwise the cockpit is straight out of the box. I’m really liking this kit!

My build for the campaign will be the Airfix Mitsubishi A6M2 (model 21) Zero in 1/72 scale. Although not the absolute best Zero in 1/72 (that is probably Tamiya’s A6M, followed by Hasegawa’s), this recent release still looks to be a worthy replacement for Airfix’s old kit from 1959. Plus, at about US$8, it is a great deal!

Here are the start pictures:

Since this release is in late war markings, I‘ll be using some aftermarket decals to depict an aircraft which participated in the Pearl Harbor strike from the carrier Hiryu.

These new Airfix kits look really nice – I can’t wait to dig in!

Here are the photos of the finished USS Arizona 1/200 Trumpeter Kit.
The same photos are in the campaign gallery.

Great campaign and there are a lot of great models in the forum. I expect many more in the last 2 months.

Bob R.,

Thanks for the comment. Your base coat looks good. Feel your pain with the airbrushes. Just did the same recently.

Mark, nice A6m.

I did a little painting after I took all of my a/b's apart for major cleaning . Found on a youtube video that Lysol all purpose cleaner will take old dried paint off any part of the a/b.

Bottom and top surfaces are painted now, just waiting till dried to take off the poster putting and tape.

Try some Mr. Mark Setter and Mr. Mark Softer on them decals. They work fabulously.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I can't get those products in India. But, I'll put it on my shopping list for my upcoming trip to Singapore.

About 99% complete. Just need to add the antenna wire and position lights.

Sitting on it's gear and the engine installed. Unfortunately, the engine fit is not very good. No matter what I tried, I just could not get it to fit flush. But, got it close.

The 20mm canon and the tool for operating the main gear.

Staring down the business end

Engine cowl installed

Canopy and propeller added

Fuel tank installed

Progress continues. The gun sight, using the Eduard pe parts, is installed. The forward canopy is also installed.

Time to start applying all those stencil decals (and there are a lot ).

Most likely it would be Tamiya XF-71, IJN Cockpit Green.
