HMS Dreadnought (Rhino Models - 1/350)

  • dreadnought002
This is the old Rhino Models, HMS Dreadnought kit (now part of the ISW Empire), which represents the ship circa 1907. The model is built basically "out of the box", with the addition of the following items:

*Steve Nuttal barrels for both the main battery and 12lb guns.
*A torpedo net shelf built from plastic card.
*A torpedo net fashioned from shoe laces.
*Gun director for the signal tower made from plastic rod.
*Replaced all the torpedo net davits and coaling davits with plastic rod.
*Replaced some of the ships boats with boats from Iron Shipwright.
*Masts made from brass rod.
*Rigging is a combination of .003 monofilament and .004 nylon quilting thread.
*The model is painted above the waterline with Humbrol 64, while WEM paints were used for the dark grey (507A) on the turret tops and corticene for the superstructure decks. The lower hull color is RN Anti-Fouling Red, while the boot topping, and tripod mast is Testors gloss black.

A further resource was the many e-mails with Jim Baumann, who was very kind in answering my questions and supplying additional photos of his stunning model of the Dreadnought.

This model now resides on the Battleship New Jersey museum, where it's part of their "Development of the Battleship" display.

Hi Martin The Dreadnought looks very nice and clean built! You must be proud to have one more model on display (on a real place, not just the internet)! Thanks for sharing it Skipper

Ah well Martin, everything fits so perfectly in your builds, you must have computer induced fingers so that you are able to do such tight job every time! There is no fails with what you build

Thanks...she's part of the collection of, and now on display on, the Battleship New Jersey Museum. You guys are going to give me a big fat head...thanks for the kind words, especially from an artist like you, JB. However, notice there are no close up shots - gotta hide all the flaws (and there are plenty!) somehow!!

Martin, I wanted to bring up this blast from the past that you posted before I had become really active on MSW. This is a beautiful build, and I was lucky enough to see it in person on the New Jersey. The pictures don't do justice to the master craftsmanship you put into her. I just wanted to give you my own overdue kudos.
