IJN Escorts Away!

  • Etoro10
Crewmate Dade Bell shares a fine set of images with us of his dual escort vignette, IJN Escorts Away!

The story...
Here are the IJN Etorofu (in the lead) and IJN Kanju escort vessels. The Etorofu is in her late 1943 fit, while the Kanju is in her 1944 fit (the added AA and radar is a quick tip off). This scene is actually a bit of fiction- as far as I know, the Etorofu and Kanju never sailed together like this. But the opportunity to show two different types of fit in one scene was irresistible.

The models are based on the Skywave 1/700 Escort Type Etorofu (2 in 1) kit. I added some photo etch rails from Tom's Modelworks. The crew are from the Eduard IJN pre-colored PE set. The base is wood and the water is crumpled aluminum foil. Rigging is .003" line.

Finished in Tamiya paints and weathered with Bragdon Enterprises and Tamiya powders.

That is astounding work. You forget the tiny scale of those ships, until that pic with the coin next to them...awesome. I, too, would love to hear how you did that water out of aluminum foil. I've only heard methods using acrylic medium, or resins. Your foil method looks great. Cheers, Mike

Great looking ships, well displayed on a very effective water base. Off course I'm rather biased as any ship of the IJN sets me off! Thanks for sharing, Frank

Hi guys! Thanks so much for all the kind words! Whew, I'm gonna get a swelled head! I built these escorts because I don't think the little guys get enough attention (that is, vessels smaller than destroyers, but larger than torpedo boats). I've got a bunch of other obscure transports, escorts, tankers, etc. I'd be glad to write up a how-to about my water. The effect isn't good for anything large, but for 1/700, I think the aluminum foil works pretty well. I'm working on a couple of review articles and I need to get my 1/250 Musashi build log started up, but I promise to get a foil how-to done by month's end. Thanks again!
