MSW Crew-mate Peter Fulgoney (PeterF) took the maiden voyage on a magnificent, new cruise-liner, "Independence of the Seas", and shares the experience in this MSW walk-around!



The ship was delivered prior to it’s “maiden voyage” and so 2 x additional cruises were laid on, we took the second to the Canary Islands, Portugal, and Spain.

Built in Turku, Finland, Independence made the trip to Southampton to pick up passengers for an initial trip to Cohb (Cove) in Ireland. This incidentally is the last stop the Titanic made before the voyage into history. Unlike the Titanic, we boarded on 6th May 2008, and attached are some of the pictures taken of the ship all brand new, clean, and HUGE!

Draught 28 ft.
Length 1112 ft.
Tonnage 158,000 tons.
3634 passengers.
1360 crew.
15 decks.

The pictures show the various ports, and inaugural celebrations and various internal and external views of the ship including the bridge which the captain kindly granted permission to visit on behalf of and exclusively for modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net.

Also in the line-up is a visit to Lisbon where our three, fine model making friends, Pedro, Fillipe, and Rui joined in the celebrations, and made a great highpoint to the tour.

Excellent Walkaround Peter! I really enjoyed seeing it (again!), but as a Naval Model Contest Jury, I have to make a couple of remarks on "your" Independence of the Seas: - The portholes below the bridge are way out of scale! - Do not attempt to replicate the spin of the Portuguese Tug on BFM tugs! I know that they can spin on a dime, but that is just showing off! Nice shot of the group (I am not drinking any beer, btw) Cheers, Mate Thanks for publishing it, Mark Rui

It's quite stunning when you compare it with "The Golden Hind", "Mayflower", "Cutty Sark", "HMS Victory" etc. Looks like you had a great time Peter!

There are maps on the landings of the staircases, and touch screens to help. The only time we had a problem was when we were trying to find the cinema to watch Shrek 3 but that was our own fault for not reading the map properly - it was so eay to get around wwe expected to find it straight away.
