"Sharks!"...a diorama

  • 100_01552
"MSW Crewmate Domi Ruiz Bauza (barbacanosa) shares a photo gallery of his first maritime themed diorama with us in this MSW "On Display" feature!"

the concept, and the build...
The story, well this was an idea that had occurred to me for a long time, and I was looking for a boat which I could use to serve as a basis.

I was in no hurry to carry out the work, and finally one day I found the boat in a toy shop while I was working on another diorama (try not to do two jobs at the same time!).

Without having any idea of naval subjects, I photographed some yachts in the harbor, and looked for information on the internet, to eliminate some elements of the toy vessel that I was using as a base, and replace them with wood, to make the model ship.

For the sharks, I did not need to do anything...they are some toy reproductions that I found in the souvenir shop of a water park.

The completion of the water was much more simple than it may seem, starting first with layers of dark blue at the base, then went about pouring thin layers of Epoxy resin (resin and catalyst)...and when I had reached the desired height/depth, I placed the sharks, and the boat on the base, and then kept pouring resin to reach the height that I wanted.

The waves were made with a product in the Vallejo Water effects range...one need only to extend it with a thick brush, and give form to the water with the same brush. While un-cured, the product is white and thick, but when dry becomes fully transparent.

For the foam and splashes, I just used a few pieces of a sponge that had the proper texture, layered the Vallejo Water Effects over the pieces, ending with white painting effects for the white caps.

Lastly, and to end, the crew is formed from the figures of Tamiya, British 7 pounder Artillery Crew, with which I had to change positions and create some uniforms to become "men of the sea".

Well what can I say, GREAT work. I love the way you have created the water so that you can see the 2nd shark coming along side the boat. Thanks for sharing your work with us. PeteV

When Domi joined MSW with his maiale dio, I just didn't know who we were dealing with!!! After Domi posted his first and second dioramas, my mind made a click! For those who haven't seen it, or didn't made the connection, see this! Does ring a bell? Well, I have already commented this dio (when Domi posted it on the forum), so I'll just drop these lines and wish Domi to keep on doing great, original, very dynamic and attractive dioramas! Saludos Hombre! Rui

I already said it, i say it again, Sharks is the best diorama I saw for the whole of last year, it has everything i love about a diorama, which is "being bold" and "having a great idea". Since then, Domi never failed to impress me again and again with every new project of his, he is an "author" like you've got some author movies.

Sharks. Dirty, rotten, stinkin' black eyed teeth monsters. You've caught that "moment" well, and the crew seem to reflect both fear and exhilration well! Nice boat with very real details. LOVE IT!
