HMS Queen Mary...Scratchbuilt!

  • 100_1470
"New MSW crew-mate Marius Chescu (mariuschescu) sends us a gallery of his 100% scratchbuilt HMS Queen Mary, his first submission, in this "On Display" feature!"

The most famous british battleship from, WWI, which was unfortunately sunk in the battle of Jutland.
The model is entirely scratchbuilt, in the scale 1:300.
I had very good drawings for reference, by John Roberts.
I made the hull plank-on-frame, and covered by fiber-glass. For the wooden deck I used pear-wood cut into
0.8 mm stripes. For superstructures I used plastic and aluminium sheets.
Lucky me to have a daughter with long hair, who provided me with material for the rigging!
The rust on the hull is real rust colected from a piece of iron.

I am at a loss for an adjective I can use for that build that suits it well enough. But that is beautiful work! Welcome Marius!

Wow, unbelievable work! Doubly so since you built it in a non-standard scale (1/300) and thus not being able to use some preexisting parts in 1/350. Amazing!

Stunning, spectacular! Heading towards scratch building myself, I can only hope to do such nice work some day and I'll be proud if I ever achieve half as much.

Hello Marius! Excellent Craftsmanship that you show with your HMS Queen Mary! One thing that stroke me (hard) was the smoothness of the hull, the excellent level of detail throughout (like the chart table!) and wire spreaders! I have nothing to say but: CONGRATULATIONS! Rui
