HMS Danae, 1942

"MSW crew-mate Peter Fulgoney (peterf) gives us yet another fabulous build to look at, this time the HMS Danae, 1942 in this "On Display" feature!

This build is based on the NIKO Models kit, ORP CONRAD, a 1:700 scale resin kit with some photoetch.

Essentially I wanted to build a camo version, and the ship was previously RN HMS Danae, and so the game begins.

I used the Raven Roberts book on British WW2 Cruisers where there is a good picture of the ship in the camo scheme. I didn’t have a line drawing, but referenced HMS Durban in the same book. The camo colours are referenced in the Allan Raven book “Warship Perspectives”... however the deck colour is unknown – I chose plain timber as a certain starting point.

The kit is very nice, in good quality resin. You will need pe railings as you require, but the pe included is satisfactory. I found the lantern radar a bit basic, so I replaced it with 1:350 railing... also the deck planks are a bit too thick and the instructions need backup information, but otherwise simple to build.

Data :
6 x 6 inch main guns
3 x 4 inch AA guns
2 x 2 lb AA guns
29 kts.
450 officers and men
Built 26/01/1918, and broken up 1948
On 26/01/1944 was adopted by the Polish Navy at Portsmouth, and became ORP Conrad.

She´s a little beauty and its interesting that the colourscheme matches the scemes used on British tanks used in the desert - "one colour fits all" Cheers/Jan

Yes Jan, I hadn't thought of that, you're right. So, who's idea was it first or was there a bit of coordination. Probably a good paint salesman who had a job lot of sky blue, and taub. Thanks for the nice comments, guys - always a pleasure. Acually, Eric I'm not in E Anglia but Kent and Sussex. I don't know how the wrong location got into the mix. I'll have to inform the management. And so, back to Averoff! Cheers, Peter F

Hey that's a pretty nice one Peter, I just love the cammo and the way it contrasts with the dark sea, another one of your lovely works -and then that rigging!! i would get mad trying to do half of it

Hey Peter! Another great model from Fulgoney's ShipYard! As usual you have done an excellent work with the camouflage job, excellent rigging and good mood/balance of crew aboard the ship. A winner! It's good to see that you are able to split attention between Averoff and other projects, keeping the focus. Rui

Thank you shipmates, and looking back over my last 4 builds, they are all camo. Am I stuck in a rut? The Danae, Rui, was for Telford and was agreed with the guys that we would all build cruisers. I am now exclusively working on Averoff. It may look very advanced but the smaller detail takes longer than placing the funnels and gun turrets combined, and there's a lot of it still to do. Cheers, guys. Peter F
