The Ships at ModelTroia 2009

XI ModelTroia Contest
This years ModelTroia Contest, the eleventh, was for the first time held in Lisboa, in the Forte do Bom Sucesso, a XVI century fort that also houses the Museum of the Combatant, focusing on all conflicts that Portugal have entered in the XX and XXI Century. This fort is administrated by a non-profit organization, the Liga dos Combatentes (Combatants League). A very dignifying place, in the Lisboa waterfront, just a stone away from one of his most important landmarks, the Torre de Belém.
The ModelTroia staff surely hopes that the event can continue in this place, and that this can be a long relation between the two entities.
The ships...
Strangely this year we had more ship models only on exhibit than competing, but, perhaps it is a sign of the times... I really like that more ship modelers could come forward and bring their ships. There's is no reason to fear the competition or the judges, by that matter. It is one of the ways to improve our skills, learn new talents, evolve.
The Japanese Flag table was shared between two SIG's: GIN (Grupo de Interesse Naval - Naval Interest Group) and 1/72 Japanese Aviation SIG
Some of the ongoing projects seem to be very interesting like a 1/72 scale USS Essex class CV or a very small 1/700 Armed Trawler... we can wait for these to grow and be finished.

Many thanks to all modelers who have entered and visited the Event - until next year!

Enjoy the photos....

Rui won two medals. One for his LST diorama (can´t remember his placement) and a Gold award for his "Diogo Cão". Rui : Next time, don´t forget to add a photo or two of ModelTróia´s surroundings... perhaps we could convince some of our friends here at MSW to come to Portugal in the next event... .

Thanks guys, it was a pleasure to share these photos of a Good weekend with ship modeling friends Now for some correction: NRP Diogo Cão F-333 (1964): Gold in Masters (Plastic & Resin ship models Class) and the Pedro Figueira Award for Best Ship; Somewhere in the Pacific... : Silver in Military Dioramas (all types and scales) Getting Ready for another mission: Bronze in Military Dioramas (all types and scales) But the fun of the event and place of the venue, being with friends was, I must say, the most important thing! Some of us, although Portugal is a small country, only meet in the modeling events and we have a lot of ideas and things to share and talk about... Rui

Congratulations Rui, welldeserved recognition! Nice picture report too, I like that you have taken more pictures of the same models, but how come you didn´t open thet 1:144 XXIII box and showed os the contents, or is it a comming in-box review ? Cheers/Jan

Hi Rui Please accept my appologies for not having stated correctly what you had won. I completely forgot that "Getting Ready..." dio, as well as the Pedro Figueira Award...shame on me !!!! .
MAR 22, 2009 - 01:58 AM
You have to convince Filipe Ramires on that - it was his u-boot. I opened the box, it is a work in progress and I can say that comparing it with ICM Typ XXIII it looks much better (it has three conning tower options!!!) It looks a good value for the money - as ICM one was too Chaiça, No need to apologize, please... Rui

Well, I guess I can manage that though I wasn't exactly expecting to build this one in the next couple of months (no Rui this is not my secret project either!!!). I have a few lights of what kind of diorama I want to do with the Type XXIII and I guess I'm not having too much work with it so therefore I guess I can write something about the model....being either a simple review or a "build article". Your choice. It's an easy model, with fairly good details and accuracy and very accessible in price (15 Euros if I recall). Regards, Fil
