The Ships at ModelTroia 2010

Another year...
This was the 12th ModelTroia contest, and for the second year in a row, held in Lisbon, in the Forte do Bom Sucesso, home of the Liga dos Combatentes Museum, in one of the most beautiful areas of Lisbon. The weather gave us a break, of the most wet winter since there are records of it, meaning...1870!

The amount of models entering the contest and exhibition was steady as it was last year, with a great number of visitors and modelers, apart from the "contenders", many of them naval modelers. As usual, the GIN (Naval Interest Group) had a table with materials, models, works in progress and references, so that others could understand a little bit of this passion for 1/700 big ships, and look at the models with "different" eyes and not only the little ships. These models and works in progress were taken by me and Filipe Ramires (_Admiral_Fil) and I am sorry to say that we outnumbered the amount of ship models in the competition. Maybe next year we can have more?

Of special note, is the fact that, even few, for the second year in all ModelTroia history, a ship won "Best Of Show", a 1/100 fully scratch built NRP Sagres! A well deserved winner that also took best ship, Museu da Marinha Award (Navy Museum) and Revista de Marinha Award (Navy Magazine). Congratulation to Rui Figueiredo, the master modeler!

I know you'll probably say that's okay, but thank you for the effort in displaying these photo's, some very nice shots, I like the idea of that diorama, the one with the tree line, I might have to nick that idea lol. Thank you again.

Skipper, I echo Alec, thanks for taking the time and effort posting these photos. There are some great ships there. That sailing ship is a real stunner, no wonder she won best of show. I also liked the wrecked sub on the sea bottom. So what's up with the weather? I thought Portugal was supposed to be always sunny?

Hi guys @Alec: You can nick it, but then be prepared to the owner go and talk to you, at Telford @Rodger: The entries were good, the Barge was a real masterpiece and deserved all the prizes it got! About the weather... go figure, but than, it's winter. A severe one, but winter! @Louis: Thank you for the compliments! The two portuguese ship dio, is my own creation, and it was supposed to be in the contest, if it wasn't for the big carpet monster that ate two parts, and after searching for those parts for one hour, I gave up... trow the towel, but took it to the SIG table! There are more shows coming up, so.. Good luck for your show, and if possible, can you do the Ship Only Report? The two portuguese ship dio are: F-331 NRP Diogo Gomes, a River class frigate modernized and shown in the 1952 fit (they came to Portugal in 1949) - this is the 1/700 Seals Models kit; A-527 NRP Almeida Carvalho, a Bangor Class Fleet Minesweeper, modified to Portuguese navy configuration, in this case, also the 1952 fit. Later this ship was converted to a Corvette and went to the Portuguese African Colonies of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, as F-470 NRP Cacheu. This is also a 1/700 Seals Models resin model. The Gomes and Carvalho are real standouts and I had a suspicion who produced them. This reminds me of what famed mathematician Daniel Bernoulli exclaimed when he saw Isaac Newton's anonymously submitted proof solving a physics riddle which had stumped the experts for years: "The lion is known by his claw!" So, I salute the Lion of Lisbon! (How do you say that title in Portuguese?) --Karl

Heheheh Thanks for the "Lećo de Lisboa" Title... of course this would be perfect for Filipe (football team symbol: Sporting Club de Portugal)...
