D-Day Landing in 1/700

"MSW crew-mate Alec Cap (bigal07) shares his 1/700 scale D-Day diorama with us in a gallery of images in this "On Display" Feature!"

This is my interpretation of the D-Day landings, inspired by the actual black and white photo that I used as a backdrop to this diorama in some of the images.

While building this 230mmx510mm scene, I couldn't even begin to understand what it must have been like all those years ago, the huge LST rammed up on the beach-head, while jeeps, trucks and tanks being quickly unloaded...floating above, ever watchful for German aircraft, are the barrage ballons, LCT(R) blistered the beach, and the LSM and LST Mk2, all overloaded and unbalanced with one aim...secure the beach-head!

There are, if you look, people on the beach, a bottle-neck of GCM cargo trucks stuck, as in the actual photo...one Landing Ship Tank is in the process of pulling itself clear of the beach after unloading its cargo of tanks, and a small landing craft in fear of being crushed against a pier and LST.

The 10 surface craft, along with all vehicles are Skywave models, 1/700 scale kits and accessories. There are 2 seperate kits that made up this diorama...the sand/muddy beach is made from plaster, the sea from gel, and the German damaged field-gun scratch built from odds and ends.
