Scottish Nationals Model Show 2010
24th & 25th April

Held at the Dewar Centre in Perth, the Scottish National Scale Model Show is an annual event which hosts model traders, model clubs and special interest groups from the length and breath of the UK.

This year was my second visit to the show and the first time I had taken part.

The show had the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain as theme and there were interesting exhibits on many stands, war time literature and paraphernalia such as gas masks.

The centre of the hall ( a defrosted curling rink) had exhibits from many Scottish local groups, for example Dundee, Aberdeen and even Orkney. There was an invasion from across the borders (only just across) in the guise of the Washington Model Club and from even further afield came the Derby & District Model Club.

Numerous SIG’s and special interests were represented, bomber command and propeller airliners and one I particularly enjoyed, Dave Montgomery and his history of model kits. Dave was flanked by Montrose Air Museum and another trader selling older kits which made for an interesting corner.

Traders were spaced all around the central core, airbrush equipment was particularly well represented by Cammett, Little-cars and Simple 2 trade with air brushes, compressors and accessories at budgets to suit everyone. Model kits were available from a number of traders and the Choroszy resin kits were of note. Lonewulf Models had quite a few mini-sub kits and a lovely vignette of a speed boat and jetty made up on display.

Sadly model ships were seriously under represented, S boats and other MTB’s were well represented in 1/72 on several club displays. Aberdeen (I think) had an excellent fleet of liners and merchant marine ships. The liners were based on repainted and detailed white metal Triang ships. Other than this ships were in very short supply on the display & club benches. There was a fairly large display of submarines which provided the only marine focused display.

In the competition things were slightly better, a nice rendition of the Cutty Sark and for model shipwrights, the highpoint of the show, not one, but two Italeri 1/35 S Boats. Apparently the Judges couldn’t split them and awarded them both Class win prizes. One was from a regular contributor to Model Shipwrights.

Hopefully other MSH contributors will post photo’s of these as my camera was not up to the task of capturing the sheer size of these models.

Well, on balance, I enjoyed the show, the atmosphere, the people and the opportunity to learn from what others are doing, I even won a useful prize on the tombola, not a Noddy Book in site, but I was disappointed with the very restricted range of marine subjects, both display and for purchase, far fewer than last year. So Model Shipwrights, the Scottish Nationals would be richer with your involvement, see you there next year?
