HMS Dreadnought 1906

"MSW crew-mate Colin Swager (cswager) shares his first submission with us, in this fine gallery of images of his build of HMS Dreadnought, in this "On Display" feature!"

I have recently discovered modeling as a hobby and have just completed HMS Dreadnought 1906.

This is the third model that I have attempted and the first resin ship. I found it quite a challenge and chose to modify and/or scratch build some parts. All the masts, yards booms etc are metal. The rigging is done with a combination of stretched sprue and Japanese cotton.

The model is painted with Humbrol and Tamiya enamels and weathered with Tamiya weathering sets.

My inspiration was the magnificent version of this model done by "the master" Jim Baumann. Whilst my attempt is pretty shabby compared to Jim's work, I am not totally unhappy with it. I have used many tips from modeling forums particularly by Jim.

The kit is from Iron Shipwrights and I would like to say what a great guy Jon Warneke is to deal with. I have added some parts (doors, hatches, stanchions and figures) from White Ensign Models and L'Arsenal USA ( Thanks to Tony.)

I am a retired Medical Microbiologist. I built my first ever model at age 56 and was instantly hooked. I am mainly interested in ships but may try some armour one day. I am inspired by some of the great modellers whose work is featured on this site.

Hi Alec It's great to get feedback, especially from someone as talented as you are. ( i have admired some of your creations in the past.) I agree, Dreadnought does look a bit shiny but I think that is because the photos are taken on a small lumix digital camera with flash. In the flesh it does not look anywhere near as shiny. When I finished it I sprayed the whole model with a Tamiya satin finish spray can. i love these ww1 ships and it is disappointing that so few are available in kit form. I will attempt the iron shipwrights HMS Invincible ( battlecruiser ) before long. I love the Combur resin kits but they are all 1/700 scale. I wish they would do some classic ships in 1/350. I like the look of HMS courageous by Admiralty model works but once again I would love to see this ship in 1/350. i hope that eventually one of the plastic kit manufacturers will do one or two of these classics. I am positive they would sell really well. My first two models were Trumpeter HMS hood 1/350 followed by HMS KGV by Tamiya. The latter came out real well but I am better at rigging now and will go back and redo this aspect. I will then post it on this site. I am currently doing a little 1/700 Tamiya waterline series HMS Rodney to have ago at making the sea. Any tips would be most welcome. Great to chat to you my friend Kind Regards Colin

Hi Karl Thanks for your kind words. The model looks really shiny in the photos because they were all taken indoors with flash on a lumix digital pocket camera. I like 1/350 scale and my first two models were HMS Hood (trumpeter0 and HMS KGV (tamiya) I wish these guys would do some WWI ships. I am sure some like the dreadnought, invincible. indefatigable. queen mary or lion would be highly sort after in 1/350 scale. You indicate you are doing HMS GLORIOUS IN 1/350. I love this ship. Is this a kit and if so where oh where can I lay my hands on one? Great chatting with you. Regards Colin

Hi Jo Thanks for your kind words. The figures are 3d resin and are from L'ARSENAL. You can get them from Tony Brunch at L'Arsenal USA. Cheers Colin

Looks good! Someday I might finish a ship kit.

Hi Colin! You're Dreadnought looks just fine with its finish as is. The Glorious project is a drastic conversion using the Trumpeter Repulse as the basis for the ill-fated carrier of 1940. Yes, there are a few changes to the hull like a more extreme blister and a new stern, but if you look at the features I have submitted to this site, I am no stranger to serious conversion and scratchbuilding work. Needless to say, a full-on kit of the Glorious and her converted cohorts would be a blessing, but I won't wait that long! --Karl

Thanks Karl I think there is a nice little resin kit of glorious and courageous in their pre carrier days, from admiralty model works. I might do one of these just for fun. They might not have been a success as battlecruisers but they were great looking ships. Good talking to you Regards Colin
