"MSW crew-mate John Donnelly (johndon) shares a fine gallery of images of his IJN Yukikaze in a dockside dio, in this "On Display" feature!"
Entitled ‘History Awaits’ it depicts the Yukikaze dockside in May 1942 preparing for the sortie to Midway. The Yukikaze is the Hasegawa kit with detailing both from the Tom’s Modelworks PE set and some scratch building. It has taken over 2 years to build (I’m not the fastest builder in the world J ) and contains over 2000 separate parts.
With the exception of the figures (L’Arsenal) and the vehicles (GHQ) pretty much everything else is scratchbuilt from styrene and left over PE most notably from the WEM USS Hornet Interior set and the GMM USS New Jersey set (the crane on the barge alongside the Yukikaze comes from this set). Most of the boats come from the Revell 1/480 scale USS Yorktown kit. The large crane is a work of fiction albeit it is inspired by a picture I found of Kure naval yard.
Painted and weathered with Tamiya acrylics with the ‘water’ being Tamiya X22 Clear being added one drop at a time and tinted with brown although this did come out more of a red shade than I had intended.

This rates as one of the best harbor scenes I've encountered--the assemblies, the weathering, even the water color--this is a diorama with life.

Thanks for the kind comments Karl, next up is another harbour diorama set in 1942 but a little larger this time...
