French Battleship Bouvet

The Bouvet….

I've enclosed photos of my latest build, the YS Masterpieces 1/350 Bouvet. It's a departure from my normal 1/700 scale, but it was the only kit of the Bouvet available at the time.

I built it out of the box except for the rigging, which is 9X Dai Riki line (.002), and the flag. Although it's a comprehensive and well detailed kit, it still needed a good amount of sanding and filling, particularly on the many gun turrets. There were some fit issues here and there which make the kit suitable for a modeler with some building experience.

I used Floquil Grimy Black for the hull, Testors Ivory for the upper works, and Floquil Reefer White for the boat hulls. Black gun barrels and the crane pulleys are Floquil Engine Black. The upper part of the main railings and the upper part of the lifeboats and their insides are Testors Wood. All colors were enamels and all were flat except for the ivory which necessitated flat clear over it. I used Testors Flat Acrylic Clear for that.

Excellent build, really captures the idiocyncratic design of the French Pre-Dreadnoughts. Si

Bob, Bob... Are you (again) refuging yourself from 1/700?? Just kidding, here! I like what you have done with the YSM Bouvet, just OOB... Even without going with all the bells and whistles like Jim Baumann is doing with his, it's still a very impressive and good looking (in a strange kind of way, that is) ship. Congratulations Cheers, Rui

Another impressive build. You know, the use of warm light in the photography gives it a vintage sepia look. --Karl

Thanks for all the nice compliments! That sepia tone is just the result of me being a lousy photographer!

When you reach the top level, it becomes museum quality, and that's exactly what this build is. It would not be easy to compare it with the Jim B build as the kit's final appearance has been envisaged differently and therefore should be admired in a different way, and finally Jim would have to work his best to match Bobby's level of presentation and expertise. Excellent, Bobby
