This WWII Canadian Flower Class Corvette kit was originally made by Matchbox in the 70's but was reissued by Revell-Germany in recent years.

I added Great Little Ships main gun, rear gun and twin gun detail sets to the fray. I made scratch-built pulleys, oars, ropes and detailed the doors with various materials.

The wood planking was painted using oil glazes over enamel wood coloured paint. The hull was reinforced with brass tubing for strength and to deal with the warp of the large plastic pieces. I painted the model using mostly Model Master enamels and weathered it with oil washes.

As an avid armor modeler, I couldn't resist but depict this ship returning in battered condition after a long voyage. The model took 8 months from start to finish and will now get a wood cabinet built for it. I plan on adding crew figures at one point but I will need to custom sculpt them using some of the provided figures as a base to work from. This is by far the largest single project I have ever attempted and thank you for coming to take a look at her.

first time i built a model it was a hot rod and i was five year old. i painted it using blue nail polish and it was the best model i had made yet (given it was my first it wasn't that impressive). but i have tried to keep that feeling for over 40 years, each model i finish gives me the gratification...

Due to the sheer size of this model, most people R/C this 1-72 scale monster, I've always wanted to build this along side the S-100 however due to a very serious lack of space, I could build, but never be able to display it. This is a very fine job, and my only bad point would be, ''crew'' there are a lot, and I do mean a lot of 1-72 figures out there, and this model in my little opinion is screaming out for a crew.

I would have to agree with Alec on the crew thing, but otherwise its a very beautiful build, and your armor weathering experience really does this build good. Congrats on a well done job! Cheers/Jan

thanks everyone for the kind words. i do plan on making the crew but this project took so much time i wanted to ensure i finished it. i told myself that i would add the crew at a later time and do them justice instead of just whipping them together to get to some sort of end. i also want to build a cabinet for it too. the kit crew was pretty basic so my plan is to use the figures as a base and custom sculpt the crew doing various tasks, a bit of an undertaking. i have plenty of references for the uniforms and will hopefully do a decent job of representing the crew who serviced this ship. happy modeling. cheers, mh.

Excellent work! I have this one in my stash, but was deterred by the GLS's owner who professes the kit isn't worth building without all $300+ of his upgrades (you essentially throw away the styrene except for the hull and rudder). That seems like a lifetime's work, so I had even debated selling the kit. Now I may revisit the thing. Did you really use all the kit parts for the deck, superstructure, etc.? Here is the kit with the entire Great Little Ships upgrades used.
