"MSW plank-owner Rui Matos (skipper) sends us his annual ship photo report from IX ModelScala contest in Montijo, Portugal, in this MSW feature!"
During the weekend of 25 and 26th of September, the IX ModelScala contest in Montijo, Portugal was held.
It is currently the most attended modeling event in Portugal, gathering together model clubs from all over the country, as well as visitors from Spain and France; a delegation of SteelMasters was there, participating and making contacts.
From what I heard, they were very surprised with the high quality of the modeling shown in all areas!
The sun and the nice weather helped the venue, making 600 models registered for competition, with a hall full of shops and accounted plus 2800 visitors for such a short timed event.
This ship only photo report shows the naval bits of the event: Wooden Ship models (kit based), plastic ship models in two scale divisions: bigger and smaller than 1/500 and scratch built ships (wooden, plastic). Also included are the only three naval entries in the Military Dioramas category (all types, all scales), these by yours truly!
Congratulations to AMM - Associação de Modelismo do Montijo (Montijo's Modeling Association) for another great event! Next year it will be the tenth!

An excellent collection of naval subjects! That weathering finish on the Type VII is fascinating, and what an impressive turn-out of sailing subjects. Is that typical for the Lisbon show?

Thanks, there were very good models in the contest... the only bad point is the venue lighting
Back to the ships, usually there aren't that many wooden ship models... wooden and plastic usually don't mix much.
Normally is the plastic modeler that makes an experience into wooden models and displays them.
Wooden ship modelers consider plastic ship models just a simple way of getting a ship model

I understand about the wood vs. plastic debate--I have the highest respect for masters of wood shipmodelling. In fact, I consider it to be a separate hobby.
What I was really asking about earlier was the prevalence of sailing subjects in a pan-genre show.

Sorry for my misunderstanding, but there's a reason for it
Almost all sailing ships there were wooden models - exception made to the greek birreme.
As for the debate wooden x plastic... with all respect I have for wooden ship modelers and you too, Karl, I am not going to start (restart) it here

It was an impressive show from what you revealed, and congratulations on holding up our sub-specialty in naval dioramas in the face of all those armor guys!
One of the fondest memories from my contest days was having my Enterprise (CV-6) dio, the only naval dio in that show BTW, take first place in the category over all those panzers....
Your work was a standout, and not because you edited the photo coverage, either!
