HMS Mary Rose

Here are some pics of my HMS Mary Rose from WEM. It's easily one of WEM's best kits and I can recommend it to both the beginner in resin and the advanced modeler. There are actually no pitfalls in this kit. I did scratch-build the guns and torpedo tubes as I didn't like them much, but actually they are nice enough for the beginner as supplied in the kit. The only thing that is really missing in the kit would a flag and draft marking decal sheet. Since these were missing I added draft markings from Begemot and signal flags from Lion Roar. The White Ensign I took from the NNT 1/700 HMAS Sidney. The crew came from L'Arsenal. The lettering at the stern is from Lion Roar. The rigging is made from Lycra stained with a black permanent marker.

The base is a foam board. Waves were shaped with a rotary tool and smoothed over with sanding paper. On top the board received a cover of acrylic gel to shape the waves. It was painted with artist's acrylic paints. The weathering on the hull is done with Artitec pastel chalks. Construction took about 7 weeks including base.. That is really fast for a modeler like me.

Very nice subject and these wonderful smokers are sadly over-looked, would love to see more of this type of ship. Thank you for sharing.

Another beautiful build Guido, letting the vessel cut trough the waves shows the nature of these ships, build for speed but must have been a nightmare when it came to rolling. The rigging, as always - is a work of art. Cheers/Jan

Is that really 1:700 scale? With fine painting and rigging like that, one would be forgiven for thinking it a far larger scale! --Karl

Thank you for your kind comments, gentlemen! This is easily WEM's best 1/350th(!) kit. Get one while they are available. Cheers, Guido PS.: Carl- Only the White Ensign is from a 1/700th cruiser. Just the right size for a 350th TBD. Not supplying decals and flags si surely one of WEM's weaknesses.

Still, Guido, that's a remarkable piece. I had to scratchbuild a pair of similar types in 1:350 last year and trying to breath life into something so compact is a supreme challenge. It's just beautiful work. --Karl

You model ship builders are nuts, but real good at what you do. This just blows me away. It confirms my thought that I'd be scared to hell to be out in the vast pond in something like that. A real nice job done with this kit and very well done job on the ocean, really like the ship cutting through the waves. Beautiful looking.
