The base at Ferrol is a totally unique establishment, it was begun in 1750 and finished in 1780. Since then,no substantial changes have been made and it remains the only example of an 18th century naval base with its original architecture.

So important is the base architecturally, it has been proposed for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Frigate - F101 - Álvaro de Bazán was the first commissioned in a series of 'Aegis' equipped ships for the Spanish navy. Three more and under construction with a further five of a more advanced type being considered.
