Bill was asked to depict the known historical event of the ill-fated PT-109
torpedo boat's collision, captain of which was J.F.Kennedy, by the IJN
Amagiri which took place at the Blackett Straight in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, August of the year 1943. This project was a particularly demanding construction, given the value of this historical accounting. Bill took the inspiration of the disaster and by using Fine Molds kit of Amagiri in which PT 109 (Aoshima) is given as a bonus created the diorama.
This is the first time that we build a Fine Molds model, and felt that iit was an amazing experience. Bill thought the kit was "awesome in details ,even at the smallest pieces, unbelievable fitting and a very detailed manual." The kit was further detailed using railings and the gun barrels of Fine Molds . The P.T. 109 was upgraded by using a brass 20mm Oerlikon gun from Flagship Models. The 37mm antitank gun was built using plastic rods and sheets from Evergreen, while the shield was from PE spares box. Additional scratch building using Evergreen products was used to construct the two twins 12.7 mm guns. The ships and the sea was paint by Vallejo Model Color paints. The atolls that Bill decided to create, came to be a very pleasant and interesting addition he felt. The vegetation materials he used were from GHQ Models.

Stunning work! A lot of action going on and the wake of both vessels gives a good impression of speed. The vegetation is also very well done.

Basilios, what is it about Greece and superb naval models? Is there a new deity above Mount Olympus inspiring them? These models are incredible!

Super job Basilios! Aside from the fact that the scene is just plain beautiful (tell us more about how you do your water and land effects!), the sense of movement and story are outstanding. Great job!

Basilios - yes, please tell us more about how you do your water and land effects!

Thank you all for your good comments! For the base of the sea and for the waves I use air dry clay which I roughen it with an old brush. I like to work with simple acrylics to paint the sea and to give the transparency with acrylic gel. The secret in the gel is make a lot of layers and sometimes to paint between them lighter tones of your basic sea color. And I always put a small amount of black and green in the sea colors. And ofcource for the white water’s the combination of cotton with silicone is the better solution. If the sea is calm sometimes I use transparent resin for the final layer. The land is piece of Styrofoam with modeling paste to create the texture of rocks. The sand around the atolls is sawdust from the wood work of the wooden base of the diorama.
