Biber (Beaver) German One-man Submarine

In a recent visit to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Darren Baker was kind enough to whip out his camera and snap a few shots of some things from the sea. Darren shares with us a walk around pictorial of the Biber (Beaver) German One-man Submarine.

The Biber Submarines were the smallest submersibles in the German Navy during the Second World War. Designed in 1944, the sub was built to help thwart off an Allied invasion as well as attacking coastal shipping.

This particular Biber, No.90, was found and recovered by the Royal Navy in December of 1944. The pilot, Hans Langsdorff was found dead in the sinking craft. There were many technical flaws with the craft, one major one was the leaking of cabon monoxide fumes into the pressure chamber. Apparently this was the cause of Langdorff’s demise.

Despite 324 Biber Submarines being delivered, the one-man submarines had posed no eminent threat to the Allies.

Special Thanks to Darren Baker for providing this walk around of the Biber German One-man Submarine to the Model Shipwrights Forum!
