Georgious Averof Armored Cruiser

Basilios Geihos wished to share with us one of his most favorite builds to date; Georgious Averof Armored Cruiser At Nautical Park Museum.

Basilios used the The RHNS Averof as the subject of this piece. The Averof, a 10,200 ton armored cruiser, was considered by most of her time, to be a battleship as this was the largest ship for the Royal Hellenic Navy from the time of its commissioning in 1911 until 1951. The Averof’s heroic exploits in the Balkan Wars at the beginning of the 20th century would propel this ship into becoming the pride of the Royal Hellenic Navy. The Averof would more or less take on the Turkish Navy single-handedly on two decisive occasions and not only come out on top but unscathed as well. The Averof now stands proud as a not only as a museum ship but as testament to a grateful nation.

Basilios used a nicely detailed resin model kit from YS Masterpieces. Basilios explains, "Building the model straight from the box is not our case. I was asked to rebuilt the model as it is now exposed now in Nautical park Museum in marina of Floisvos (Athens,Greece)".

He feels it was a demanding job as he had to consult as many photos as possible......a lot of scratch built parts and "many coffee cups and cigarettes and a lot of patience". During the construction , he was asked to represent a second warship which is also at the Museum; the Velos destroyer, which had also a brave history. Basilios goes on to say, "Although there was not my customer's demand for a detailed representation of this ship as it was to be within the scenery background of Averof, the Velos was also improved". This was done by the use of a photo etch set from FlagShip Models (as you may notice in the photos). Basilios used a <>Trumpeter model for the construction of the Velos ship. The 1:350 scale figures were from 4D Models and L'arsenal. The vehicles and the yachts are 4D Models as well. All of the painting have been done using Vallejo colors. The sea scape has been painted using oils over a layer of acrylics and a lot of acrylic gel.
