Ancient Greek Trireme

Between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE, the Trireme was the pinnacle of naval prowess throughout the Aegean and most of the Mediterranean Seas. Translated form the Ancient Greek τριήρη, 'three rowers', the Trireme had three banks of oars as a main means of propulsion with a little wind-power assistance provided by two sails; one square-rigged on the mainmast and a much small sail rigged to a foremast. With a healthy ad strong crew a possible top speed of 6 to 8 knots could be obtained with an operational range somewhere between 60 and 80km per day depending on weather and of course the crew.

Ancient Greek Trireme

With a trip back to ancient time, Basilios Giehos shares another exciting miniature creation with us with his Ancient Greek Trireme. The base model of the Trireme is from Langston Miniatures and is a 1/300 scale Britannia casting with photo etch sails.

This model has amazing detail for its size; total length no more than 112mm. Basilios lets us know that some patience will be needed when working with this model. The hull is incredibly detailed as is the metal fittings supplied with the kit. The sails are constructed from the supplied photo etch and add a tremendous amount of detail to the piece. Basilios has added his usual high standard of watery diorama setting to bring this Ancient Greek Trireme to life!
