The Golden Hind

Andrew Anten shares with us his completed Golden Hind in 1/72 scale.

I was super excited, when I purchased a wooden ship kit from the Ages of Sail. I have always admired building ships, not just because it is challenging, but is creative. I was referred to Ages of Sail, by one of my close friends, who is also a creative ship modeler. Many times, we have spent hours building ships. This time the wooden ship I purchased is from Dusek- Ship of Sir Francis Drake- Golden Hind D017.

Dusek is one of the leading ship model kit manufacturer from the Czech Republic. When they started they had only 3 kits to offer. But now they offer as many as 20 ship kits to their credit. Golden Hind was a ship used by Sir Francis during his circumnavigation of the globe between the years 1577-1580. It was originally known by the name Pelican, but Francis remained her during his journey in the year 1578.

Golden Hind is supposed to be 25 meters long and had about 120 tons displacement. The ship is also known to have been armed with 18 guns of various calibers. The model was reconstructed after pictures of Golden Hind on Hondius map of the world from 1595. To build a ship kit, you will require drilling bits, pencil, rule, mini-lathe, electric plank bender, pliers, mini drilling machine, etc. Before you begin, understand the building instructions and plan and the chronology of assembly steps.
