Armoured Cruiser Georgios Averof

  • move
The Averof’s heroic exploits in the Balkan Wars at the beginning of the 20th century would propel this ship into becoming the pride of the Royal Hellenic Navy. The Averof would more or less take on the Turkish Navy single handedly on two decisive occasions and not only come out on top but unscathed as well.

This terrific model was given to Nikos fully assembled and primed, apart from the towers and deck railing, by a good friend his, master modeller Kostas Ornerakis. The kit of the Georgios Averof if from YS Masterpieces. He wanted Nikos to continue working on it so we could give it to the Naval Museum in Chania, Crete. After several rejections by Nikos, "because i thought i wasn't able to do it", Kostas finally convinced him to take on the project.

Model Shipwrights would like to thank Nikos Kosmadakis for providing these pictures of his Armoured Cruiser Georgios Averof.

Hi Nikos What an excellent build. Everything looks right, and it's great to see something a bit out of the ordinary. Jacob

What an excellent build! The wash on the decks, the dynamic water effects, and that intricate radio aerial rig! Any museum should be proud to acquire that display. --Karl
