Having read a while ago that a German type 212 U-boat took part at the ICEX 2014 training exercise in the arctic and having the Revell kit in my stash I decided to go for this unusual idea of the sub breaking through the ice. Based on some research photos showing submarine surfacing through ice and also footage of Polar bears approaching a surfaced sub out of curiosity. The most challenging part was how to build the scenery in the most realistic way.

The water wave effect was created using tissue paper and white glue. Covered in acrylic base color then covered by Valejo Water Texture gel to add depth. For the cracked snow I did some tests and found that the white latex base used under wall paints is the best material to achieve results. When applied in a fairly thick coat, the latex base starts cracking randomly as it dries. Once it was dried I removed the cracked pieces around the perimeter of the submarine water line to reveal the water then I covered the whole base in white plaster and sanded down to create the smooth snow effect. I used a piece of white foam as the base on wood and I used a piece of yellow sponge to create the iceberg. The Polar bears were made on my 3D printer and the 1/144 figure is from a German navy set. This was my first attempt to create a snow effect, quite a challenge for an Egyptian.
