Ahoy mates!
This week I am going to finally build a Type IXC u-boat as U-166 which was sunk of the coast of New Orleans.
What would the hull colors be for a IXC in June/July of 1942?

Mark,
unfortunately that is an inaccurate representation of a u-boat. There were no u-boats with red hulls.
Kenny, you can take a look at pictures of U-505 from the museum as she was an IXC boat. Here are a bunch of black and white ones:
U-505 showing weathering.
Also check out this page on U-166 pictures.
It really depends on which paints you will use, but the bottom of the boat was an antifouling dark grey and the top was a lighter grey.
Check Wink's page for more details.

Thank you gentlemen. Dougie's article is great.
I got to meet the gentleman that found the U-166 while at a contest in Houston. The Past Foundation website has been a favorite of mine since I first learned about the 166. Also, if you get the chance, read Torpedoes in the Gulf. Very good book.
