Ahoy Shipmates
There was no liberty in Manila, due to a cholera epidemic, but the mail caught up with the Fleet and, just like in today's Navy, mail call was the highlight of day.
One Great White Fleet veteran remembered one man aboard the USS Connecticut who couldn't read. He said whenever this fellow got mail, "He'd have someone read his letters to him. And he'd make whoever was doing it stick cotton in his ears so he wouldn't be able to hear what he was reading. He thought he could keep his privacy that way."
Cheers
Sean
