How about very early war? At the time of the abortive relief expedition to Wake Island she was escorted by Minneapolis, Astoria, and San Francisco, with Destroyer Squadron 4, Blue, Helm, Henley, Bagley, DESDIV 7, and Mugford, Ralph Talbot, Jarvis, and Patterson, DESDIV 8.

You're actually in luck, at least as far as the cans. The destroyers were all in the Bagley class, and the Bagley class is a follow up to the Gridley class. Close enough alike for government work. Midship Models makes a kit for the Gridley class. http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=ME0001 This is in plastic, so the price isn't too high, about $19.00.

Far as I know the cruisers, who always get left out, are only available in resin in 1/700, so far. Combrig makes all three. http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/reviews.html Being resin of course the price is higher, about $50 on line.

Now there you have me. I haven't found any info on any light cruisers as escort for Saratoga in 1941/1942. There was at least on CLAA in the area, escorting Enterprise at the landings on Guadalcanal, but she was probably miles away. Only thing I can find is heavy cruisers escorting her.

You can check out the movements of the cruisers, both light and heavy on the DANFS pages, which are over on the Haze Gray website.

I did a quick scan, no light cruisers with Sara in the 1st month of the war....which was all she lasted before being torpedoed and sent back to PSNY for repairs and rebuild, which kept her out of action until June. Sara was escorted by the San Diego from the West Coast to Pearl in June, but they both just missed the Battle of Midway.

Sara's next action would be the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. Again, no CL's as escort. You can click here to view Sara's escort for that battle.

I missed that one. If you're looking for a two ship dio, with Sara and a Lt Cruiser, that would be the ticket. There is a great 1/700 DML Premium kit of the San Diego.
