Ahoy shipmates.

About six weeks ago I posted my first MSW forum post, desparately seeking an instruction sheet for Airfix's aged Z (Narvik) Class destroyer in 1/600. Thankfully Airfix themselves came up with the goods - I was fortunate to be able to thank them in person at the recent RNAS Yeovilton Show.

Anyway, this is my first ship build since Airfix's Vosper MTB in c.1989, so please bear with me. My intention is to use the Z Class destroyer as a test bed for techniques, rather than try and create a 100% accurate build. Although, this build will represent a Z 20(something) destroyer, I'm not seeking to pin it down a particular year - having said that, it's likely to be early wartime (less AA fit).

Although the kit is nearly as old as I am, overall first impressions are very positive - all of the detail is there, if a little chunky in delivery. I've decided not to go overboard (sorry - couldn't help myself) with PE and will limit myself to the basics; chains, water-tight doors, railings and ladders.

All constructive comments will be very gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Karol

Karol,
I seem to remember waiting patiently for my local hobby shop to stock this kit way back when before PE and all the extra goodies came out. But can't for the life of me remember if I actually got to build the thing!
One thing I will point out is the after hatch in the superstructure on the forecastle deck just forward of the funnel. It looks set awfully high. you'd have to watch out for your wedding tackle getting caught on the coaming if you used it unless there's some sort of 'doorstep' you haven't fitted yet.
Enjoy your Build.

Thanks Tom - I'll hold my hand up to that mistake. I must admit it became pretty obvious to me shortly after I attached the hatch. I guess my (feeble) excuss is that I'm still getting used to these very small ship-sized scales. Prior to this build the smallest I'd ever gone was 1/72 - so 1/600 is quite a jump downwards. I haven't given up all hope just yet - both hatches (I mis-positioned this hatch's twin) will be partially obscured by ladders, which are in themselves slightly mis-positioned. Well, as I said at the start of this build, this ship is intended to be a bit a training exercise - and I'm happy with that.

Cheers

Karol
