Hello All,
I looking at my calender for 2009,i have found that there is only 3 campaigns either starting or ending in 2009. Hollywood at Sea ends March 1,Predreadnought ends May 1, and WW1 Warships start May 15.

So how about this: Gator Navy Campaign, the scope of the campaign is any Amphibious Ship, Landing Craft,LPH, etc.
The campaign will start Feb.1,2009 and end Oct 1,2009.

Please let me know if there are any question.

Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Bruce,

I was just thinking of builds for this and do you know of any where I would be able to get plans of a LST? I was thinking of doing LST 393 since it's at the great lakes museum just down the road from me.

A man after me own heart. Gator freighters are cool! I could hold off on my 1/35 LCM3 project for a year.

later...Gator

hello Frank,
maybe i should let in the Amtracs,Lvtp,Higgins,Landcraft, etc.i might pull in the Treadheads.
what do all of you think.
Or in stead of a campaign a build blog that has no end?that might be easier then a campaign.over at Aeroscale they are doing that for Exported Aircraft.
either way works for me.
cheers,
Bruce

LOL, I knew Kenny would be up for a Gator Freighter Campaign, I think I said that before. I had been thinking of a new campaign or tow, but just couldn’t nail down anything that caught my fancy.

A couple of other ideas I had thought about was a campaign on Coast Guard ships/boats. Or maybe one dedicated just to Commercial ships, such as freighters, tankers, or ships like that.

hello Jim,
why don't you do a campaign for the time period i had suggested.i can do mine any time.
besides i still have to build a ship,so it does not look like i am blowing "HOT AIR" all the time.it is the 2 month of the year and i am already 3 ships behind. Ships are a lot harder then Tanks or Planes.
What do you think about just a Group Build log instead of a campaign? it would be open ended.
if you need anything at all, please ask.
cheers,
Bruce

Ahoy Bruce!
On the wet side of the build, you can't do a true Gator Navy build without including the Higgins boats (LCP(L), LCVP, and LCM). Also, if you can find the old Revell kit, there is the LCP(R), which was based on the LCP(L) but Higgins refused to build it because he thought it was a death trap. Chris Craft ended up with the contract and it was as Higgins predicted. Milicast Models offers all the Higgins built landing craft including the LCM(6) in 1/76 resin. They also have the Chris Craft LCP(R).
Milicast Models

You also have Trumpeter's new LCAC kit and the new 1/400 Mirage High Speed Transports, APDs as they were known. These were converted 4 stack destroyers, the USS Ward was one. JAG has some of the modern LSTs and LPDs and Loose Cannon has a lot of the World War II Gator Freighters. I believe that Midship Models does an APD too. Then, there are the modern LHAs and LHDs and Trumpeter's LCCs.
The Gator Navy
USS Knox's Landing Craft Amphibs

Now, as far as getting the armor guys involved, you could include DUKWs, Amtracks and Amtanks and the modern AAVPs.

Did I mention that I love gator freighters?

I've been kicking around a Gator Task Force dio in 1/6000 scale. Would that count?

hello Jim did you mistype the scale.you typed 1/6000,i think that is a little bit small for this campaign idea.
i think that the scale will be 1/35-1/700.

No, I didn't mis-type. I really ment 1/6000. Figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Now that is something I would like to see, Jim!

Bruce, 1/6000 scale is the smallest miniature gaming scale*, for above the waterline naval miniatures, used flat on a tabletop in miniature gaming recreations of battles...this is a really cool idea, (one that I could never participate in, through lack of necessary eyesight and dexterity of the clumsy mitts that I have! ), and would be a highly interesting showpiece...

~Gunny

*Gaming Scales - Military and fantasy models may be different scales depending on whether the pieces are used for gaming, and what size army, territory and moves are involved. These scales commonly range from 1:300, a size used for micro armour up to 1:32, a common size for toy soldiers. Model ships may be a standard scale for gaming, 1:2400, or sized to be placed on a mantelpiece, something modelers call FTB or Fit the Box Scale, a scale whose parts can be packed easily by a company.

Here's where I got the idea. This is from Harry Turttledove's "Southern Victory Timeline-191" series. It's The Battle of the Three Navies, 1916, off the coars of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii).

http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/misc/whatif/3navies-6000-kg/kg-index.html

Hope the link works. I don't have much luck with links on this site for some reason.

Mine will be Task Force 61 from David Poyer's "The Med" which consists of:
USS Guam LPH-9
USS Bowen FF-1079
USS Coronado LPD-11
USS Newport LST-1179
USS Barnstable County LST-1197
USS Charleston LKA-113
USS Spiegle Grove LSD-32
USS Ault (FRAM-II) DD-698

Wish me luck. I think I'll need it.

Jim,
Heres your link.

As to your idea, I like it. Most people will make only a couple of ships and put them in a dio, so making a large group will be nice.

hello James,
go for it.the campaign should run 10 months, will that be enough time?if not i can give more time if you should need it.
i will do some research this week and fine tune what i think the campaign should be.
here is what i have so far:
1)Gator Navy Campaign
2)campaign starts Feb. 1,2009 and ends Oct. 1,2009
3)any ship used in amphibious warfare is allowed
4)no special time period
5)Higgins boat,AAVP,amtracs,etc allowed
6)LPH's,amphibious command ships,etc allowed
7)all builds may not start before Feb. 1,2009 and must be done on Oct.1,2009
8)multiple builds encouraged, but at least one build must be done for the awarding of the campaign ribbon.
9)at least 1 good, clear photo must be posted in the campaign gallery for campaign ribbon
10) please remember this is a hobby,so have fun

i do not know alot about the amphibious forces,so if this campaign is approved,i hope that Mr.Kenny(Gator)Loup will serve as my XO.
please feel free to help me fine tune this so i can summit it to Mark.all commits and suggestions are welcomed.
cheers,
Bruce
