After a few apartment moves hauling around a partially built 1/350 Musahi, I'm finally settled and looking to finish her up (and only one small break!).
My first large scale ship model.
All major construction and P/E is done.
But, It's been awhile since I've done research on techniques, painting order, etc, have forgotten a lot of things and need some advice.
I've checked out info on the web and have found some photos - most are B&W - and do not give a good guide for color.
Currently the ship is done in Tamiya Hull red below, and Tamiya Dark Grey above.
I'll be using various enamel paints (thinned and full strength) for the weathering/detailing
1) Weathering - how much, where? Ships are usually kept in better shape that armor, so should I weather less? Is it 'normal-looking' to have a turret done in dark grey, with the gun shrouds a flat white and no other paint detailing.
2) I've done a little bit of weathering, the thin enamel paint 'bled' a little bit onto areas I didn't want it to go. Any thoughts?
3) Detail painting - how much, where? P/E railings - are they the same hull grey or painted a different color? (black?) Rust streaks - how much and where? if any..
4) Wood deck- currently painted over with the Tamiya Dark Grey. I was thinking of using oil paints. A yellow-tan for a base, then various shades of brown oils then show individual planks. Finished with a very fine black wash to highlight the plank spacing. I've used the oils successfully in the past for wooden boxes, etc for armor details, so I think they should be best for the wood deck.
Any advice, suggestions?
I'll have more questions, but any advice is appreciated!!!
thanks,
Peter

Peter,
Take a look at this sight. I may give you some ideas.
http://www.ww2incolor.com/us-navy/
As far as weathering goes, the larger ships, such as the Yamato would have been kept fairly ship shape due to if being an admiral's flagship. Also, when the brass would like to visit the fleet, it was usually the larger ships that were visited. So, tin cans would show more wear than a battleship. The ships railings would have been painted the same color as the hull.
I home this helps.
