I am building the Commander Series USS South Dakota ACR-9 and wish to finish it in the scheme of the Great White Fleet. Can anybody give me a heads up on the colours used and what part of the upperworks (ie deckhouses, ventilator cowls) might have been painted differently than the rest of the superstructure. Any help will be greatly welcomed.

I painted my USS Illinois White (hull) and bull (upperworks). If you use enamels, you can get the buff from White Ensign Models.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input. Great pics Martin.

It's a lot of work to prep resin models but the South Dakota is going to be a beauty when she's done. I always thought the Great White Fleet livery was so much better looking than wartime gray- the white and buff really highlights the classic outline of turn of the century U.S. naval vessels. I especially love the tall funnels, so typical of pre-dreadnought American warships.
