They also are the ones who hold the keys to the paint locker. The paint locker is one of the most important places on board ship. If it’s broke, paint it!
You mean the place where the sailors insure that the ship matches our models.
I remember being sent to the paintlocker for 5 gals of Navy Equipment Gray. The Chief Deck Ape gave me 5 gals of white, 1 gal of black and the message to tell "Chrome Dome" (The MM Chief that sent me) "to make any fricken shade he wanted, but he better make damn sure that he got the fricken brushes back clean".

We had ours premixed. Haze grey and Machinery grey. We ran out of machine grey one time and had to use haze in the engine room. You couldn’t tell the different once it was all finished.
JP-5 worked out great for cleaning brushes. I got so many sodas bought because people wanted JP-5 to clean brushes.

Just for the oil lab. 2 sodas per each 1/2 full coffee can. I had to strip the tanks anyway, so why not put it to use.
After a while people just came down with either two Pepsi or two Mt Dews with a coffee can. The mess cranks even used it to clean thier stainless steel. That usally got me a pizza or a dozen sandwhiches. Gotta love the bartter system

We had a 1st class BT that ran a pizza mess in our berthing compartment.
He worked a deal with the reefer rats to store his frozen pizzas there for the cruises.
Brought aboard a toaster oven, and would set it up at night in the corner for the movies.
