Hi Guys, I was surfing around the net last night and came across these 2 pics of the CRN on D Day.

The sailors look to me to be wearing the American style life jackets and if so this would open up the possibilities for some alternative type sailors for the 3rd boat

Any thoughts?

The R.C.N. stencil on the life vests is Royal Canadian Navy (not Canadian Royal Navy by the way... ). The RCN in WWII did use a mixture of British, American and Canadian designed, manufactured and distributed gear. Especially with the time for D-Day approaching, it's very likely that a variety of styles of life vests were worn, including US types. The RCN stencil and serial codes tells me that at least there was time enough for the materiel to go throught the Canadian supply system and be properly catalogued and issued.

I don't see any shoulder flashes or insignia of any kind on the soldiers in the landing craft, so it's possible these were British troops (or non-Canadian at least) embarked on a landing craft worked by RCN personnel. Nice pics and good diorama potential, thanks for posting them.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info and the correction - RCN. I was looking under Juno beach so I'm reasonably sure they are Canadian troops although it is possible they are British, always hard to tell.

Great, more possibilities.

Many thanks

Al

No problem mate.... If you were looking under Juno Beach, then it's likely that they are Canadian troops. I guess not everyone had shoulder flashes or unit insignia all of the time. They still could be British, guess we'll never know. The sailors are definitely RC though. By the way, the destroyer in the right background in the second pic looks like one of our Tribal class destroyers,,,could be HMCS Algonquin or HMCS Sioux, maybe even Haida. Nice find, if you find any more, please post them.

Hi Bob,

I've got too many to post here but here is a selection that I hoep will be of interest. My apoligies I cannot remember exactly which sites I got them from I was searching both Web and Images and if it said Juno I downloaded then for reference:

embarkation

These 3 are probably the most known ones from the footage shown in World at War which show the Canadians landing on Nan Red (this would have been the North Shore Regiment if my info is correct). I remember these images from being a young child and seeing the proghramme when I was 8/9

If I'm correct then this is also where 48 RM Commando Landed, this being the same 2 houses from the rear/side

Nan Red Beach

48 RM Commando

Here's a pic of confusion

and some more of the run in on the boats

Some are from the Imperial War Museum and these pics are posted for Reference Only.

Hope I got the order reasonably correct.

Cheers

Al

Hi Bob,

You're welcome. Glenn aka Cheyenne posted a link to a Camadian site on the Big A. Some of the pics I must have picked up on web searches but there are others that might interest you here:

Al,

Some nice pics you got there. Those are the same houses from front and back. You can thank who ever made the Juno Beach MOD on COD for that answer!
