Ahoy mates!

Having read about the u-boat war in the Gulf of Mexico, I was curious about how the German subs laid mines. On several occasions, mines were laid of the mouth of the Mississippi River in the Gulf. Some of these boats are said to be Type VIICs. Could these have actually been VIIDs? Time frame in which I am looking at is summer of 1942.
